Hello My Name is Kathleen Anen. I am a Special education teacher in Lakewood High School, Lakewood NJ.
I have the privilege of working with a student name Ruben Monge Perez. Ruben suffers from medical issues. Due to these medical issues he is now confined to a wheelchair.
Ruben came to me two years ago from Puerto Rico. His first language is Spanish. With a warm smile that is kind and happy you can't help but smile yourself.
The family story has slowly unfolded to me: Dad brought Ruben to New Jersey, because his wife (Ruben's Mother) died and service for special needs students had been cut due to economic hardship in Puerto Rico. Speaking to Ruben's father we have learned a few things: Ruben does not have a handicapped accessible home. They are currently living in an one bedroom apartment. The owners of the complex stated to them they will not install a ramp for Ruben's wheelchair which would enable him to get in and out the apartment with ease. Also, the bathroom and hallways are too small to accommodate his wheelchair. Therefore his father must carry him in and out of the apartment and as well as within the apartment when movement is needed. Ruben's father receives a small amount of money each month and more than 75% of it goes towards rent - making the father choose between diapers or food for Ruben.
We are working towards Ruben getting a handicapped accessible apartment and funds for his basic needs to ease the financial hardship and physical strain of his father. Any donation is greatly appreciated!
