This donation page is for my nephew Karter, who lives in Columbia, MD, with his mother, Breonna. Karter is 14 months old and the most loving, cheerful, affectionate, and brave warrior we've ever seen.
Diagnosed at birth with Alagille Syndrome, which is a genetic disorder that affects many different parts of the body, including the liver, heart, eyes, face, skeleton, blood vessels, and kidneys. A person with Alagille syndrome has fewer than the normal number of small bile ducts inside the liver. Karter has already conquered several tests, procedures, and surgeries hoping that these efforts will lead to a long, healthy, and fulfilled life.
In March 2021 Karter's health began to decline and he was immediately admitted to Johns Hopkins Children's Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He was diagnosed with liver failure and in need of a liver transplant.
While performing all of the tests needed to qualify for the liver transplant, doctors discovered that Karter was also suffering from severe heart defects. To become a candidate for a liver transplant, his heart will need to be repaired. The surgery required to fix his heart comes with great risks. The medical staff at Johns Hopkins Children's Hospital has taken wonderful care of Karter. Due to the complexity of this surgery, the medical team at Stanford Hospital in California will attempt to repair his heart. Karter will take a medical flight to California in a few weeks to prepare for his surgery.
Surgery is scheduled for June 22, 2021 (tentative)
This Go-Fund Me is designed to help alleviate some of the financial burden on Karter's mom (Breonna) in the months to come. She is a single mom and will have to take a leave of absence from her job to be with Karter in CA for a substantial amount of time. We have set an ambitious goal. At this time we don't have any certainty on the duration of Karter's rehabilitation. Donations will go towards travel, lodging, food, and maintaining household bills.
