Call for Assistance to People Impacted by Hurricane ETA

The 2020 holiday season has arrived and while still in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we all look forward to sharing some joy and celebrating with those we love.  This year, more than ever, we may feel gratitude for our health, our homes, the food we enjoy together, and our relative privilege and security.

Meanwhile, Central America has been severely impacted by back to back Hurricanes ETA and IOTA on November 7th and 17th respectively.  In Guatemala, 184,011 people, according to government estimates, were forced to abandon their homes due to these storms and seek refuge in official and makeshift shelters where social distancing is impossible.   Over one million people were affected throughout various regions of the country and cut off from help as dozens of bridges and roads were destroyed or damaged by flooding and landslides. At least 54 people lost their lives and many more are still unaccounted for.

Much of the worst damage affects communities that were already suffering the highest levels of malnutrition and generally precarious living conditions, compounded by the impact of COVID-19.  Access to clean water, food, clothing, and shelter are the obvious concerns in the short term.  In addition to infrastructure damage and losses, initial surveys following the storms identified at least 6,000 Guatemalan families that suffered corn, bean, coffee and other crop losses on 3,100 hectares of land and the entire state of Izabal was still under water and not accessible to surveyors at that time.  In the months to come, these losses will continue to threaten the economic and food security of many communities.

Every dollar that you donate will count toward helping the resilient people of Guatemala to rebuild and recover as soon as possible.  Thirty dollars provides food to a family for a week.  Twenty dollars can provide filters that will supply dozens of people with clean water for months.  Five dollars could buy a toy for a child whose family has lost everything.  Any amount is appreciated.

REDGUA delegates will be traveling to Guatemala in Mid-December to work directly with community leaders on the ground and coordinate aid delivery to affected and displaced families.

If you are not able to donate, we understand, but please take a moment to share our appeal with others so that we can bring urgently needed help to that largest number of people possible!
