María del Carmen Porras Hernández was struck and killed by a motorist, July 8, in the morning at the intersection of Coney Island Avenue and Church Avenue.

Here is her story and how members of the Kensington, Windsor Terrace, Ditmas, Flatbush, and greater Brooklyn can support her family at their time of need. The interview was conducted in Spanish by Kensington resident Luis Varela.

María del Carmen arrived in New York in 2004 from her hometown of Quecholac, located in the Puebla State, in Central Mexico.

María del Carmen, a single mother, was determined to make a better life for herself and her daughter, Ana Karen. Although she was not fluent in English, she was encouraged by the fact that her two sisters were already established in Brooklyn. And so the three Porras sisters worked hard at improving their lives in the United States.

At the time of her death María del Carmen worked at Laundromat Mania on Ditmas Avenue and as a housekeeper for a family on Cortelyou Road.

Described as a cheerful person, her home is filled with religious artifacts and flowers. The Virgin of Guadalupe enjoys a prominent place in the dining room. Albums of photographs show her smiling, both with her daughter, Ana Karen, and her niece, Dolores González, daughter of her sister

The family was not prepared for this calamity and they want the community to know they are grateful for any financial assistance that can be offered. María del Carmen did not have any life insurance policy, nor did she have any death benefits from her employer.

Any donation will be appreciated by the family.
