Rebuilding Haiti with Hemp

We're building Haiti back better with hemp! Her Many Voices and hemp industry partners are coming together to take a first step in building with hempcrete in Haiti. 

Her Many Voices Foundation (HMVF) has been working in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake, where hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives. Haiti was still healing from the massive damage done by the 2010 quake when a massive 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit Haiti, August 14th 2021, killing more than 2000 people. The death toll still rises..

HMVF will be expanding our work in Haiti to help rebuild communities with hempcrete, a safe and sustainable concrete alternative. We have partnered with Americhanvre , a full service hemp building material installer, to create needed dwellings. The first structure we intend to build is an orphanage, completely destroyed in the quake.

The shock leveled schools, orphanages, places of worship, businesses and homes. As of August 18, the Haitian Civil Protection General Directorate reported that more than 60,700 homes have been destroyed and 76,100 others have sustained damages, leaving thousands without shelter. Countless others are injured and hospitals are overwhelmed. Aftershocks continue. The Haitian people are also facing hurricanes and widespread hunger due to drought and economic instability.

Hempcrete lacks the brittleness of concrete and consequently does not need expansion joints. The result is a lightweight material, better suited for Haiti. This is one of many benefits to using hempcrete.
