The Read & Write Program of Kingston, NY

The Read & Write Program, founded over 25 years ago, is the only free, year-round supplemental literacy program providing early intervention (accepting children at four and a half years of age), tailored to meet the specific and multiple needs of underserved Kingston students who might otherwise drop out of school. 

We've continued our work throughout the pandemic to improve students' reading and writing skills and meet the needs of our community. During the summer, the Read & Write Program, along with other local organizations, partnered with the city of Kingston, provided educational and social support for students during the difficult time. The Read & Write program was proud to be part of this network.

Now that the school year has begun, our focus has been on supporting remote learning in our two locations in Kingston, NY.  For children who are already academically behind and encounter barriers to accessing the technology, remote learning can be even more difficult for students.  The Read & Write program helps students engage with their teacher, the lessons,  and the homework. We want to make sure students are passing their classes and learning the necessary skills to become well-rounded young people. 

This program has always been important but even more so now because parents and guardians cannot make sure their children are completing their coursework due to their full-time jobs. This program supports the entire community by providing a safe space for students to engage with their schools and lift some of the burdens of parents and guardians in an already underserved community.

Your donations will help us provide laptops with the necessary software, educational and record-keeping software, books and workbooks, utensils for the meals provided for students in our program, and PPE for all staff and students.
