Helping Kim reach the top

Sometimes, people let difficult moments define what is real. They let those moments dictate what reality is and how the future is going to unfold.
And then – every so often – there is a person who is so great at being a human being that they let these moments happen and they never look back. Kim Wobito is one of those people.
Strong. Human. Being.
On Sept. 4, 2015, life presented a tremendous obstacle to Kim. That late summer afternoon saw Kim rushed to hospital. She was in pain. Severe pain. Doctors were pretty certain an infection in her gall bladder was to blame. She would be treated and released within a day or two.
Things didn’t go according to that plan.
Overnight, Kim experienced a hemorrhagic stroke. In the following days, she underwent intrusive brain surgery and lay in a coma with her family and friends in a state of uncertainty about the future.
“This experience has been life-changing,” says Kim’s daughter, Ashley Croft. “I draw strength from my Mom herself. She has always been – and this just proves – that she is the strongest person I know. This isn’t the end; it’s just the beginning. The beginning of a new life journey. Take one day at a time and make it count!”
This is why I write this now. I created this GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for Kim and her family to put towards private physiotherapy that will take place within the comfort of Kim’s own home. The sessions cost $100 per hour. There are some hidden costs along the way, such as installing support bars in various locations within their home. I am creating a goal of $5,000.
Inside re-learning to walk, Kim has another goal of finally ascending the two-level staircase to her own bedroom; renovations had just been finalized last summer and Kim has yet to spend an evening in it with her loving husband, Ralph. She’s worked hard to be able to climb the stairs to the first landing; she will keep working and climbing until she reaches the top.
Kim is also experiencing what is called aphasia. She has a combination of speech and language disorders caused by damage to the brain. People with aphasia can experience occasional trouble finding words, losing the ability to speak, read or write; intelligence, however, is not impacted.
Kim has embraced the physical and mental war on the effects of having a stroke. She is now prone to having seizures; two to date. Blood clots; only one to report. Kim is re-learning how to walk and talk, and is dealing with mobility difficulties within her right arm. Each day is a positive step toward the future.
Kim is an incredible woman. An inspiring mother. A forever loving wife, sibling, daughter, and aunt. Her titles go on. She is everything to a lot of people.
I’ve come to realize that Kim’s everyday goals: doctors’ appointments, check-ins with centres, nurses, specialists, and the ongoing physiotherapy that Kim needs; there are high costs involved, and they’re worth it. The Wobitos, Crofts, and Mundys are amazing people; amazing families. They, along with many close friends, have been supporting Kim and supporting one another along the way.
Their love is inspiring.
