Reaching for the Stars: Giorgia's Journey to NASA

Ciao a tutti, mi chiamo Giorgia Rota e voglio condividere con voi la mia storia e il percorso che mi ha permesso di essere selezionata per partecipare ad un esclusivo programma di formazione in ambito spaziale offerto dall’International Space University e ospitato dalla NASA.

Sono una studentessa di ingegneria di 24 anni cresciuta ad Almenno San Bartolomeo, una tranquilla cittadina in provincia di Bergamo dove la notte le stelle brillano ancora luminose. Da quando ero bambina, la mia passione per lo spazio è stata alimentata dal fascino del cielo notturno. Così, dopo un breve tirocinio durante le scuole superiori presso l’osservatorio astronomico La Torre del Sole, ho deciso di imbarcarmi nello studio dell’ingegneria aerospaziale, conseguendo una laurea triennale presso il Politecnico di Milano.

Il successivo passaggio alla Laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria Spaziale è stato quindi un allineamento naturale delle mie aspirazioni. Questo percorso, quasi giunto al termine, mi ha permesso di accrescere le mie conoscenze nell’ambito dell’esplorazione spaziale, concentrandomi negli ultimi mesi sull'analisi della dinamica dell'asteroide Didymos, tema centrale della mia tesi sviluppata presso il DART Lab del Politecnico di Milano.

Circa un anno fa, cercando ulteriori sfide e opportunità di crescita, ho deciso di unirmi a un'associazione spaziale, PoliSpace, dove tutt’ora faccio parte di un team di studenti che si occupano della progettazione di un CubeSat, un satellite di piccole dimensioni che verrà lanciato per eseguire dei test scientifici nell’orbita bassa terrestre. Questo mio coinvolgimento mi ha così consentito di partecipare e vincere una competizione organizzata dalla start-up Leanspace, svoltasi a Brema durante la principale fiera europea dedicata alla Space Technology. Questa esperienza mi ha permesso di vincere una borsa di studio di 12.000 Euro fornita dall’ESA (Agenzia Spaziale Europea) per partecipare allo Space Studies Program (SSP) offerto dall’International Space University, un'opportunità straordinaria per arricchire il percorso accademico e professionale di circa 100 giovani talenti da tutto il mondo, volenterosi di eccellere nel settore spaziale.

Questo programma intensivo a cadenza annuale, quest’anno si svolgerà dall’ 8 giugno al 3 agosto e sarà ospitato a Houston, Texas, presso il NASA Johnson Space Center e la Rice University, dove il presidente Kennedy pronunciò il suo famoso discorso annunciando l’intento di portare l’uomo sulla Luna. Lo scopo di questo programma è quindi offrire un'educazione completa nelle discipline spaziali, arricchita da workshop pratici e visite professionali, consentendo di entrare in contatto con esperti rinomati che ricoprono ruoli facoltosi sia in agenzie spaziali, come ESA e NASA, ma anche nel settore industriale, come SpaceX (da pochi giorni ho infatti appreso che visiteremo anche il sito di lancio di SpaceX Starbase).

Questo programma rappresenta per me un’opportunità unica per realizzare il mio sogno, ma le spese di partecipazione totali ammontano a 20.000 Euro (escluse spese di viaggio, assicurazione ed extra), lasciandomi quindi altri 8.000 Euro da coprire autonomamente entro il 31 Marzo (di questi ho già versato 1.000 Euro attingendo ai miei risparmi). Purtroppo, questa cifra risulta difficilmente ottenibile per una studentessa universitaria, andando ad incidere in modo significativo sulle finanze della mia famiglia. Per questo chiedo umilmente un aiuto ad amici, conoscenti e alla comunità per poter realizzare quello che non è solo un sogno, ma anche un’esperienza che mi cambierà la vita.

Hello everyone, my name is Giorgia Rota, and I want to share with you my story and the journey that has allowed me to be selected to participate in an exclusive space training program offered by the International Space University and hosted by NASA.

I am a 24-year-old engineering student raised in Almenno San Bartolomeo, a peaceful town in the province of Bergamo where the stars still shine brightly at night. Since I was a child, my passion for space has been fuelled by the fascination of the night sky. Thus, after a brief internship during high school at the astronomical observatory La Torre del Sole, I decided to pursue studies in aerospace engineering, earning a bachelor's degree from Politecnico di Milano.

The subsequent transition to a Master's Degree in Space Engineering was a natural alignment of my aspirations. This journey, nearing its completion, has allowed me to deepen my knowledge in the field of space exploration, focusing in recent months on the analysis of the dynamics of the Didymos asteroid, the central theme of my thesis developed at the DART Lab of Politecnico di Milano.

About a year ago, seeking further challenges and growth opportunities, I decided to join a space association, PoliSpace, where I am still part of a team of students involved in designing a CubeSat, a small satellite to be launched for scientific testing in low Earth orbit. This involvement enabled me to participate and win a competition organized by the startup Leanspace, held in Bremen during the main European fair dedicated to Space Technology. This experience earned me a €12,000 scholarship provided by the European Space Agency (ESA) to participate in the Space Studies Program (SSP) offered by the International Space University, an extraordinary opportunity to enrich the academic and professional path of about 100 young talents from around the world, eager to excel in the space sector.

This intensive annual program, this year scheduled from June 8th to August 3rd, will be hosted in Houston, Texas, at the NASA Johnson Space Center and Rice University, where President Kennedy delivered his famous speech announcing the intention to land a man on the Moon. The purpose of this program is to offer a comprehensive education in space disciplines, enriched by practical workshops and professional visits, allowing participants to connect with renowned experts holding prominent roles in space agencies such as ESA and NASA, as well as in the industrial sector, such as SpaceX (recently, I have learned that we will also visit the SpaceX Starbase launch site).

This program represents a unique opportunity for me to realize my dream, but the total participation expenses amount to €20,000 (excluding travel expenses, insurance, and extras), leaving me with another €8,000 to cover independently by March 31st (of which I have already contributed €1,000 from my savings). Unfortunately, this amount is difficult to obtain for a university student and significantly impacts my family's finances. Therefore, I humbly ask for help from friends, acquaintances, and the community to make this not just a dream but an experience that will change my life.
