Even though having a disability (Polio at age 4), I graduated from college in 1972 and worked for 31 years,with the last 18 being at Comdisco,Inc. in Chicago. When this $4 Billion company filed Bankruptcy,and liquidated,my whole world and Life was turned upside down.I lost ALL of my retirement money in company owned stock,and have worked only 3 of the last 11 years full time!
To support my wife and son (who was 14 years old at the time) I had to use my 401k over those 8 years of not working,to make ends meet. When the 401k was exhausted,we could no longer make our mortgage payment on our home of 27 years. We lost our home to Foreclosure/Short Sale in October of 2012.
We are now renting a home and really can't make ends meet on Social Security,a small ($155 monthly) pension from a company from 29 years ago,and a small annuity. My wife works part time for TJ MAXX for minimum wage.
I was actively looking for work until December 27,2013 when I was stricken with Viral Pneumonia and was hospitalized for 6 months,in 5 different hospitals,with the final 7 weeks at RIC (Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago).I was on a Ventilator for 3 months,and was removed on June 12 2014. I lost at leat 50% of my strength through atrophy,and since being released from RIC on June 17th,have in home therapy. As a footnote,I "coded" twice in early January and thankful to be alive!
My medical bills are mounting into the tens of thousands of dollars,after PPO insurance payments.My accounts have been turned over to collection agencies,as well as the hospitals.
Because of my condition, interviewing is not a possibilty for the near and distant future at age 66 years old. I MIGHT be able to work from home for 2-3 hours daily,but those type of jobs are not readily available,as my networking and job search indicate.If someone looks at my profile on LinkedIn,every job since Comdisco,except Stericycle was part time as a consultant doing whatever was needed.
