Ravenswood Elementary is such an amazing, energetic, and nurturing school. This year the school is celebrating their 125th Anniversary. The class of 2019 eighth-graders have been working hard to raise funds for their class trip to Washington, D.C., but they need your help to get them there.
For many of these amazing students, this will be their first trip outside of Chicago and could be a life-changing experience that they might not otherwise have. The class (40 students + teacher chaperones) will travel round-trip on one coach bus and have three full days to tour D.C.
The class of 2019 8th grade students hope to visit the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Arlington National Cemetery, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the U.S. Capitol, the White House, and the National Mall and Memorials. This trip will show our students how people from different backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs are all part of the United States.
It is important to Ravenswood that every 8th grader who wishes to attend can do so - regardless of each family's financial situation. The kids are of mixed racial, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds (35.9% of Ravenswood School students live in low-income households with higher percentages in the upper-grade levels). Each family has been asked to contribute approximately half the cost of the trip. For those families unable to contribute, financial scholarships are offered, and are included in our fundraising efforts.
They have hosted two movie nights, a mattress sale, and a bake sale. Additionally, they have sold pizzas and candy bars to raise funds for their trip to help ensure that every classmate can attend. They even hosted a special movie screening at the Davis Theater and participated in a Walk-a-thon. These events in themselves have taught them invaluable life skills. To date, the students and their families have raised approximately $10,000, but we still need to raise about $5,400 more. The GoFundMe campaign will help to fund seven full scholarships for students in need and to help lower the trip's overall costs to all families.
