Our friend, Raven Jones, has a rare and aggressive form of prostate cancer. He is only 53 years old, but he is at Stage 4B. The cancer has metastacized to his bones (collar bones, spinal column, sternum, pelvis), lymph nodes and organs, and the tumor has caused kidney failure by obstruction.
Raven is a gentle, independent, and hardworking man who worked as the custodian of the Lincoln Building and the old Train Station in downtown Champaign. He has always had a smile on his face and warm greeting for everyone he would see, and the tenants of these buildings consider him part of the family.
Raven needs financial support because, while he really should be living in a nursing home or an assisted living facility, he has been denied admission to local facilities because he has a criminal background. Raven rents a small house in Urbana, but his disability income is not enough to meet his housing, medical, or living expenses. His disability income is just shy of the total cost of his rent. Other regular expenses include utilities, water, trash pickup, phone, etc. - as well as food and medical supplies.
Raven gets dialysis three times a week. He has nephrostomy tubes coming out of each side of his back, and he has to flush these several times a day with saline syringes, and these are not covered by insurance. He uses four syringes a day. Winter is coming and Raven needs to get new kinds of clothing to keep him warm while accomodating his nephrostomy tubes and bags.
With medical support from his team of caregivers (his "people", as he refers to us) and his home health nurses, occupational therapists, and physical therapists, Raven can manage to live at home. But he does need financial support to do so. He has no other options right now.
Raven's prognosis is very poor. The cancer is very advanced and very aggressive. The goal of this campaign, and all our efforts to care for Raven, is to make sure that the rest of Raven's life is comfortable and that he can live out his days at home without worry or fear of financial burdens.
I hope you can help! I estimate needing approximately $1,000 per month to meet ongoing expenses, including paying down overdue utility bills.
