Ranger’s Journey to Hearing the World

Our sweet boy, Ranger, has already been through more in his short life than most of us could imagine.

Ranger was born with hearing and even passed his newborn screening. At first, we didn’t think much of it when loud noises never seemed to bother him. But as the months went on, the ear infections started — and they just wouldn’t stop. By his first birthday, Ranger had endured more than 13 ear infections. After so much advocating, we were finally referred to an ENT at JCMG. On January 31, 2025, he received ear tubes. That helped with the infections, but something still didn’t feel right. He still wasn’t responding to our voices.

At his 6-week post-op appointment, mom and dad requested a hearing test. That’s when our journey truly began. During the testing, they could tell something wasn’t right. The audiologist told them they needed to see a bigger hospital. That’s when they were referred to Children’s Mercy.

They tried everything — natural sleep tests, sedated tests, countless appointments. Finally, Wavey & Tyler were given the news no parent ever wants to hear: Ranger had profound hearing loss. The world stopped in that moment.

He was fitted for hearing aids, and we prayed they would give him even a glimpse of sound. But his hearing loss was too severe — the hearing aids couldn’t help. Before moving forward, Ranger had to go through a long 30-day trial period, countless visits to specialists, and even a sedated MRI to make sure Ranger had the nerves needed for cochlear implants.

Finally, last week, our brave little boy underwent surgery for cochlear implants. He came through like a true fighter, and in just a few short weeks, his implants will be activated. That moment will be life-changing. For the very first time, Ranger will be able to hear his mommy and daddy say, “I love you.”

This journey has been filled with uncertainty, fear, and so many prayers. But now, we are filled with hope. We are endlessly grateful to the incredible team at Children’s Mercy for keeping our baby safe.

Now, we’re asking for help from our friends, family, and community. The costs of surgery, follow-up appointments, therapy, travel, and ongoing care are overwhelming. Every single donation — no matter the size — will go directly toward helping Ranger adjust to his new world and giving him the chance to thrive.

Ranger’s smile lights up every room, and we can’t wait to see his face when he hears laughter, music, and the voices of the people who love him most.
