The kidney facts:
On behalf of myself and all of Randy's Family and Friends who have put their thoughts into getting this page started, I would like to give you some insight into Randy's life. Randy was diagnosed with IGA Nephropathy about six years ago. For those of you that are not familiar with this disease, it is also known as Berger's Disease. It is a kidney disease that occurs when an antibody called immunoglobulin (IGA) lodges in your kidneys. This results in local inflammation that over time may hamper your kidney's ability to filter wastes from your blood. Currently, no cure exists for IGA Nephropathy, but there are therapies that can delay the initial need for dialysis and transplantation.
The back story:
Randy has always been an active person who loves to watch and play basketball. Recently, he was able to coach his son's basketball team, even though it was tiresome and took a lot of energy. He loves being involved no matter how ill he is feeling. According to some of Randy's doctors, he was not suppose to be in need of a transplant until he was in his 60's. He is a young 46.
Randy is a father of four beautiful children ages 18,16, and 14 year-old twins. He is devoted to making their lives the best it can be. If you spend any time around him or you talk with him about his children, you can see how much he loves his children.
During the two years of him being on dialysis, it has been a bumpy road and even scary at some points. We have been doing home dialysis since last March, which has allowed us to be at home with family, instead of at a dialysis center five hours a day and five days a week. The good news: we have been working really hard to get Randy's dry weight as low as we can, which lowers the excess fluids around his heart. This lowers the stress on his heart, allowing it to return to normal size.
The costs:
With that being said, his health is looking great and he has been on the list to receive a kidney donation for two years now. The typical wait time for a kidney is three years, but can be shorter than that. I need to help him prepare for a possible three month stay in Portland. His insurance will not pay for things like transportation, lodging, food, or utilities. As you can imagine, that can be very expensive on top of maintaining his regular bills back at home.
