Hello everyone. My wife and I have started this campaign to help our close friends Saul and Lupita and their family.
Where do we begin? We have known Saul and his wife Lupita for over 20 yrs. They are amazing friends and we are better people just by having them in our lives. We have had the pleasure of watching their family grow over the years. They are a typical family, like you and me. They are parents to 2 amazing children. Sofia is 12 years old and an honor student with a huge heart. Sebastian (Bash) is 8 years old and a bright young boy excelling in 3rd grade.
We met Saul and Lupita in San Antonio years ago and immediately became close friends. Then, the day came when Saul and his family had to move to Victoria for Saul’s new career at a water processing plant. With heavy hearts, we said goodbye to our friends and wished them the best. We remained close despite the distance and were happy to see them start this new chapter of their life.
Lupita soon got a job with the local elementary school and helped her children excel! Saul settled into his job and thrived in his new career. Things were going very good for their family! Sofia started Volleyball and was doing so well in school that she was chosen to attend a national honor society group that traveled to Washington over the summer. Sebastian, began school and he too was blossoming in to a wonderful young man! They had several wonderful years before everything suddenly changed….
Their family has been struck with so many troubles it’s difficult to know exactly where to start. Sometime around Thanksgiving of last year, Lupita began to have what felt like numbness in her right foot. Initially, doctors had no explanation for the sudden numbness and seemed to dismiss the problems as bad circulation. Over the next couple months and numerous doctor’s visits, the numbness steadily climbed from her foot, to her knee, to her whole leg and eventually the whole right side of her body became numb. Doctors finally concluded that she was suffering from a blood disorder and they needed to schedule an appointment with a specialist within the next couple days. Unfortunately, a couple of days was too long, and before she could go to her appointment, she suffered a minor stroke. Lupita was rushed to the hospital and immediately airlifted to Houston where she could get proper medical treatment. Hours later, fearing the worst, the doctors come out to inform Saul that his wife was stable and thankfully, she was showing zero deficits from the stroke, plus, she had regained feeling back! Disaster averted right? We all came to realize that this was only the start….
The doctors immediately began to do bloodwork on Lupita hoping to pin down the cause of her stroke and numbness fearing a much larger problem. While waiting to get the test results back Saul hoped to catch his breath, but this was not a luxury he would get to enjoy. His daughter, Sofia came to him complaining of trouble seeing out of one of her eyes. He looked at her eyes and saw no redness, no cloudiness, nothing at all that would indicate there was a problem. So, already being distracted with his wife in the hospital he believed this to be a minor issue easily resolved with some eye drops and initially dismissed it. (though he had a nagging feeling in the back of his head, Sofia never complained about anything!)
Doing what any Dad would do, he tries to fix it. Saul went and got every type of eye drop, from allergy to pink eye, but nothing seemed to help Sofia’s eye. By this time, another day passes, and the blood work results are not yet back for his wife. At this point, Sofia’s vision only seems to get worse. Now, Saul is beside himself with worry! In between visits with doctors and checking on his wife, Sofia comes to him scared and tells him that she can no longer see at all out of her eye. Fortunately, they were already at a hospital and the children’s wing was right across the street. Immediately, he rushes Sofia over and she is admitted at once.
Now, he is waiting for test results for both his wife and daughter. He feels like a pin ball bouncing back and forth between the hospitals, taking care of his son Sebastian and trying to keep his sanity.
After hours of nauseating worry, Saul finally gets some answers for Sofia’s problem. She is diagnosed with a partially detached retina and will need to have emergency surgery to repair her eye or risk losing her vision forever!
All he can think is… This must be some kind of joke! How can daddy’s little girl go through something like this, while Momma is in a hospital bed across the street?
They were immediately put in contact with a specialist that would perform the surgery, but he was not available to do the surgery for three days! More waiting! More worrying and stress! While it was scary and stressful, the surgery went through with no complications, but they did discover that her left eye also has a slight detachment and would eventually need to have the surgery as well. Oh yeah, while we are at it, this is a hereditary condition, so, his son, Sebastian would need to be brought in and evaluated too. Great!
By the way…. How’s momma doing?
Several more days pass, Lupita feels like she is doing better, Sofia is regaining her eyesight and Bash is nervously waiting with Dad not quite knowing what is going on! Praying that the worst is over, they are hopeful that everyone will be able to go home soon and get back to school and work.
This is the moment when the doctor comes in with the test results. Saul can see by the look on the doctor’s face that they aren’t going to go home just yet. The doctor informs them that after doing the blood work, they have diagnosed Lupita with stage 4 cancer! What??? How??? This all started with numbness, now we are face to face with the Big C???
Saul can feel the world close in on him and can barely hear the doctor as he informs them that Lupita has cancer in her lungs, liver and pancreas.
Plans are made, appointments are set and at long last, its finally time for the family to go home. Don’t celebrate just yet, because when they get home, they find that their home is flooded. The roof was damaged during Hurricane Harvey and the crew hired to fix the roof did not finish the job so now their home is immersed in 2 inches of water. The hits just keep on coming!
This is not the end of the story, only the start in a long road ahead of this family. Life doesn’t stop for tragedy. Currently, Saul is running himself ragged between work and travel every week from Victoria to Houston for doctor’s appointments. Bills are stacking up!
Lupita can no longer work and is bed ridden, only getting out of the house to make trips to doctor’s appointment and chemo treatments.
Sofia will need another surgery on her left eye and possibly additional surgeries depending on the success of the first surgeries.
Sebastian is waiting for summer, but not for vacation. Instead, he too has been diagnosed with the same problems with his eyes and will be needing surgery before his retinas start to fully detach.
So, what now? First and foremost, they need prayers. We ask that all the prayer warriors out there come together to help this family. There is so much power in prayer and we know Jesus can perform miracles. Please pray for this family!!
Next, chemo has since begun and while Lupita is fighting a strong fight, the medical bills are piling up and there is still a long road ahead for all of them. They need all the financial support they can get with medical bills mounding and being down to a single income times are more difficult than ever.
Saul and Lupita are amazing people, amazing parents to their children and they are some of our very best friends…
