Dynamic Dylan is a kind-hearted kid with a mature view of things. Believe it or not, at age 5, he communicates clearly asking the nurses during his hospital stays for hot dogs, waffles and basin buckets to sort his toys. It is this perspective that has helped him and his family face the biggest challenge of his young life.
In late April 2016, Dylan was diagnosed with a rare childhood cancer called Neuroblastoma. Soon after, it was discovered that the cancer had also spread throughout Dylan’s bones. He could not walk or stand and his cancer is classified as Stage 4 and High Risk. He wears a back brace which supports his spine from breaking and being distorted and will have to wear it for years to come.
Dylan has endured many excruciatingly painful treatment sessions and exams. However, like the many hero action figures that surround him in his hospital room, Dylan is a fighter. He has undergone six cycles of chemotherapy, three weeks of radiation treatment, two stem cell transplants and currently on his fourth out of six-immunotherapy treatments. Sadly, due to one of the treatments he has permanent high frequency hearing loss and will need a hearing aid. Between these treatments he has undergone surgeries including a open biopsy, several bone marrow and aspirate biopsies, a Med-Comp placed in his chest only to be taken out and replaced with a Broviac recently.
Despite the many challenges ahead, Dylan and his family are hopeful and encouraged by the love and support from church, friends and the kindness of strangers. His mom, Teresa whom no longer have a job/income is Dylan’s primary care provider is under immense stress. Unable to plan to move forward to support her son and the uncertainly of Dylan’s future is terrifying. As one treatment is close to the end another may come, it is unknown of Dylan’s future. His family is considering trial treatments once this treatment is completed.
