Edenthorpe War Memorial fundraiser to add a Hero

Donation protected
Edenthorpe War Memorial was commissioned six years in October 2015.

Since its original commision the name of Leading Cook A. Sillence Royal Navy was added in 2016.

It has come to light this year that an Artificer from the Royal Navy a Petty Officer Fred Darley whose parents lived on Conisbrough Road, Edenthorpe was kill in action on HMS Eagle, a WW2 aircraft carrier which was sunk by a German U Boat whilst on operations as part of the Malta convoys.

Fred is only commemorated on his Mother and Father's gravestone at Rose Hill cemetery.

The war memorial belongs to the people of Edenthorpe who did some fantastic fundraising to make the memorial possible.

Now to add Fred Darley's name to the memorial I have contacted Lidsters of Worksop who built the original memorial. They have quoted £350 to add a stone the same as was added for Leading Cook Anthony Sillence. There is no war memorial fund anymore. Therefore I am looking to raise £350 to pay for the name of Fred Darley to be added to the memorial, where it rightly belongs as he is a war hero of the Village who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

I have applied for a grant from the War Memorials Trust but we don't qualify as the memorial isn't 15 years old.

I am hoping to raise the £350 needed by creating this gofundme page.

If anyone can spare a couple of pounds I would be most grateful. Thank you

Yours Sincerely
