First marathon to raise money for Skillway.

I'm running my first marathon (Manchester - 14.04.2024) to raise money to benefit Skillway (part of THE WAREHOUSE CHRISTIAN TRUST). For me, running a marathon is something I have never done before nor thought was anything I would ever do. Less than 5 years ago I first took up Couch to 5K and could barely run for 30 seconds before needing to walk. I chose to start running to work on my health, fitness and to be a healthy weight which I was able to achieve. Choosing to run a marathon is a new challenge to myself, but also a good opportunity to now raise money for a good cause.

I recently had the priviledge of visiting Skillway to see what they do and how they help support some of the young people I work with and others in the area gain invaluable skills. It is a charity and many of those who offer their time and skills are volunteers, but the impact they have in the lives and futures of these young people is simply invaluable and inspiring.

The aim of Skillway is to motivate and instil confidence in disadvantaged or disengaged young people by teaching them practical craft skills in a workshop environment. The students we work with are generally finding it hard to accept and work within the very academic environment of school, or are home-tutored.

The students enjoy our ‘hands on ‘ learning delivered by volunteer skilled craftsmen, with long standing experience of their specialist trades. The students are treated as young adults in an environment unlike school and are prepared for the world of work, and/or further training in specialist Colleges, or Apprenticeships.
