Help Us Reach Our Goal TODAY!

Empowering the People of the Rainforest Through Sustainable Economic Alternatives to Deforestation!

Rainforest Partnership’s Mission

Protect and regenerate tropical rainforests by working with the people of the forests to develop sustainable livelihoods that empower and respect both people and nature.

RP’s Work in the Colibri Cloudforest

In the cloud forest region in central Peru, Rainforest Partnership has been working with the communities of San Antonio and Calabaza to develop the sustainable ecotourism since 2008.

We are supporting the on-going development of ecotourism that is directed and managed by the communities by providing capacity building training and the funding for infrastructure.

 Project Objective

Our goal is to further expand the economic opportunities in this community by establishing a butterfly sanctuary, which will function as a conservatory and promote the breeding of endemic and local butterfly species.

Project Relevance

This project will help integrate the dual goals of sustainable economic development & biodiversity conservation at a time when the butterfly population is greatly affected by illegal poaching.

Project Benefits

The butterfly sanctuary can provide the community with an income from the legal and sustainable harvesting and sale of butterflies.

There are several museums and universities in Europe that are interested in buying butterflies from legal permitted sources.

 Project Implementation:

- Biodiversity and Conservation

- Build a Butterfly Sanctuary

- Breed and host 15 endemic and local butterflies

- Repopulate dwindling population of butterflies

- Partner with University of Central Peru and other global Universities for research

- Train local community association members to conserve the area of Mariposario and the surrounding region

Project Implementation:
Community as Stewards

- Community earning a sustainable income while learning importance of forests and its biodiversity and butterflies

- Environmental workshops for tourists and the local community

- Legal sale of butterfly to museums

- Attraction for and income from visiting eco-tourists

- Build model for other communities to preserve butterflies

- Community members stopping illegal poaching with help of government

Urgency for This Project
Increasing Threats to the Butterfly Population:

- Increased poaching from rising demand for butterfly products

- Switch from use of nets to use of poisons for catching butterflies

- Use of pesticides for agriculture

- Habitat changes due to deforestation
