Rain Coats for the Homeless

I have worked in San Francisco for the last 34 years and consider it my community as much as my home town. I started my career working in the Financial District and eventually moved to South of Market in the 1990s. I count myself very lucky for having a job that I not only enjoy but also enables me to provide for me and my family. There are many people who are not so lucky.
Did you know that there are over 6,000 homeless people in San Francisco? These people struggle every day for basic needs. A majority of these people suffer from mental or physical disability or addiction while others are impacted by the downturn in economy. They do not know when they will eat next and there's no guarantee that they will even find room in the shelters tonight or every night. Can you imagine how that must feel?
BART has always been my choice of public transportation. After having back surgery last year, I set a personal goal of walking 10,000 steps a day for exercise. To help me achieve this goal, I would get off at the Powell Street Station and walk along Market Street. It was then that I started to pay more attention to the homeless people along the way. I've given money to a few but I felt I needed to do something that would really make a difference. I kept hearing about the super El Nino expected this winter and wondered how the homeless who are out during the day and night going to stay dry. That's when I came up with the idea of buying rain coats for the homeless. My goal is to buy 2,000 rain ponchos (one size fits all) and distribute them through Project Homeless Connect, a non-profit organization in SF.
You may think that helping the homeless stay dry this winter is not a significant issues like solving cancer or world hunger. True enough. But I believe that simple acts of kindness reminds us that the best part of being human is how we take care of each other.
Please help me reach my goal of giving 2,000 rain coats to the homeless. Any contribution is appreciated. Thank you!
