I've been involved with Minds Matter in some way for more than a decade. It's a great organization that helps underserved kids get into college. I've mentored two kids over the years (one went to Brown and the other went to Rensselaer Tech). I want to help out more so I've decided to help raise money for them by running Ragnar. For those that don't know Ragnar is a 30ish hour 200 mile relay race with 12 people per team. yeah its crazy! Our team is running from Huntington Beach to downtown San Diego April 12-13. Help support us and Minds Matter LA!

Minds Matter of Los Angeles is a rigorous tutoring and mentoring program helping underserved high school students from low income families achieve their dream of a college education.
OUR STUDENTS
Minds Matter attracts students who are willing to invest the time and energy it takes for significant transformation to occur. Entry into our three-year program starting as a sophomore is competitive and selective. Our goal is to assist students to think beyond attending “any college,” challenging them to reach higher than they ever imagined. Minds Matter students represent the diversity of our community.
MENTORING
Mentoring guarantees young people that others care about them and assures them that they are not alone in dealing with day-to- day challenges. Mentoring relationships are a shared opportunity for learning and growth. Many mentors say they gain as much from the experience as their mentees. Minds Matter drives students to realize their potential in a challenging yet highly supportive environment. We create a second family for students to rely on for their academic and personal development. Our students are challenged by their mentors to create a vision of themselves beyond the current limits their families encounter. They develop self confidence, critical thinking, problem solving, life and relationship skills, which form a foundation for future success.
THE COMMITMENT
Each student is paired with two mentors with whom they meet every Saturday for two hours through the school year, participating in a variety of activities to build a closer bond. Stability and continuity are critical to successful mentoring, so we ask our mentors to give us a three-year commitment when paired with a sophomore student. Your commitment leads to a truly successful, trusting and effective bond with a student.
OUR MENTORS
Our mentors are young professionals, ideally with backgrounds similar to our students. All can recognize and empathize with the challenges our students face. They are responsible adults who are genuinely interested in helping high school students become successful adults and the leaders of tomorrow. Once the mentor application is submitted, an extensive interview process and background check are completed. Mentors are required to participate in ongoing training to assist them in their mentoring role.
SUPPORT
Our program for students in their sophomore, junior, and senior years offers a unique combination of individualized mentoring support and group instruction that is completely free of charge. We provide the resources and guidance students need to gain admission to and succeed at rigorous four-year colleges. With the assistance of our program leadership, mentors also guide our students through choosing and applying to academic summer programs in their sophomore and junior year. Minds Matter mentors help students find their talent and potential, nurturing them to become not just college graduates, but leaders who can help shine the light for future generations.
