Radiance Yoga + Wellness

Donation protected
Thank you for your interest in Radiance Yoga! We are a blossoming studio, opening in November 2018. We are seeking support in the hope that we can offer more classes, create a beautiful environment, and stock the studio with props that allow students of all backgrounds to practice with ease. We are crowdfunding in lieu of a small business loan in the hope that Radiance Yoga can become self-sustaining, and more rapidly turn its focus to donating a portion of its profits to domestic and international charities. We believe that yoga makes the world a better place, and that begins here. Below are some details about Radiance Yoga:

Radiance Yoga will be located at 1 West Main Street in the heart of Wickford Village. The studio will share a facade with The Different Drummer, Beauty and the Bath, and Village Reflections in a brownstone row, known as The Avis Block. The studio is bathed in natural light, with exposed brick, and original wood floor. Have a look at our renderings!

Radiance Yoga is named after both the Radiance Sutras (a modernization of the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra by Lorin Roche), and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali chapter 3, verse 41. Both of these texts are steeped in the sweetness of yoga. The word “radiance” is evocative of the natural world, and our essential place within it. Whenever we practice yoga authentically we move into light, and that is the word that came forward in the studio space.

At the core of Radiance Yoga will be the intention to serve others, the community, and the world with mindfulness, intention, and yoga. The world needs more kindness, and this is our principle offering. Radiance will donate to domestic and international charities, and we aspire to be a waste-free environment. Our teachers will welcome and support each student and offer practices that are safe and nourishing to the body, mind, and spirit.

In our first year, the focus will be to establish a full schedule of weekly class offerings, including yoga, pranayama, meditation, a healthy eating support group, and Kirtan. The studio will offer a variety of yoga styles and lineages, based upon the background and interests of our teachers.

A little about me, the owner-
I began practicing yoga with my mom when I was 15 years old. In the infancy of my practice, I thought that yoga was asana. I fell in love with the postures and the movement, and before I knew it, the breath dropped in. Suddenly yoga was pranayama, and I fell in love with that, too. I began teaching Vinyasa Yoga when I was 19. Stillness and meditation were a longer journey for me, but over the years I have discovered the most about my truest nature in the practice of sitting. It wasn’t until I began studying at Naropa University, a Buddhist university in the Shambhala lineage, that I began to tap into my seated practice. I majored in Traditional Eastern Arts in the Yoga Concentration, while earning a 1,000 hour training in Hatha Yoga. For four years I taught on the faculty at Kripalu, and in their YTT program. I taught on the faculty at Canyon Ranch, All That Matters, Grace Yoga, and at several studios in the Bay Area in California. Along the way, I facilitated the seva program at Kripalu, completed an internship in the production department, worked as an outdoor educator, and managed a wonderful studio called Namaste Yoga and Wellness in Berkeley. It’s been a wonderful, yoga-filled journey! Last year my husband and I came home to Rhode Island to have our first child, Jude. He is by far the greatest teacher of my life, and proof that we are all yogis to begin with.

A little about Julie, the Director of Programming-
My career has been centered in the arts: music and theater, principally. I am a retired opera/concert singer and a current teacher of the arts at Roger Williams University. My yoga began at the same time as Eliza's, in a small class taught by Rose Russo. While I practiced meditation and breathing practices earlier in connection with my work in the voice studio and the theater, my asana practice ultimately took root in a restorative yoga class at the former Grace Yoga. I had been suffering from chronic pain at the time and this slow, meditative yoga gave me relief and sparked my curiosity to know more. I received my 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training Certification with Judy McClain at Grace Yoga in 2016. I have taught at Grace Yoga and in studios in Saunderstown and Jamestown. Regular asana practice, sitting in meditation, and seva are the cornerstone practices of my life, along with being a wife, mother of grown children, and a grandmother of Jude.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for considering us. Every contribution helps!

Many thanks!

Namaste.
