Racism Unmasked Community Fund

Donation protected
Over the past year, the East and Southeast (ESEA) community have witnessed a surge in hate crime in light of the pandemic, leaving the community in a lot of distress. Racism Unmasked formed in December 2020 after a student at Edinburgh University was physically attacked in a racially driven incident outside a university building.

We are a team of volunteers, some students and some newly graduated, who dedicate our free time doing online and in person activism work, including public speaking, content creation for social media, writing articles, recording podcasts, working with external organisations to build the ESEA community and help others feel like their voices are heard and that they matter.

We have been balancing building up an organisation from the ground with studying for exams/applying for jobs/working full time and we have done so successfully for a year with no funding. We decided that in order to keep this going and for the work to be sustainable, it was time to ask the community for help.

At Racism Unmasked Edinburgh our aims are:
  • To provide a platform for East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) voices in the UK, and give them a safe space and community to speak about their thoughts and experiences openly without judgement
  • Involve and help educate allies (non-ESEA) on how to be active bystanders, and discuss topics which they should be aware of
  • Provide an educational anti-racism platform on social media where we highlight and discuss different ESEA topics, and report on significant UK ESEA news
  • Help victims and family/friends who have experienced racism with our confidential messaging service, and direct them towards resources that they may find helpful. and help them report to the police if they wish
  • Hold community events, both in person and online, to build a stronger sense of togetherness. We wish to celebrate being ESEA as well as speak about the different kinds of racism we face.
  • Collaborate with other organisations to have a broader and more inclusive approach to anti-racism

These funds will be going towards holding events, paying for accounts that help us keep going (such as Zoom, Canva, Procreate etc), and to compensate ESEA artists and activists for their time dedicated to content creation and research. We also hope to run training courses for members and admins, to further our own learning about ESEA anti-racism.

Thank you in advance for your support!
