Rachel's fundraiser for The Joy Orphanage, Uganda

My name is Rachel Goodfellow, founder and sole fundraiser for the Hidden Needs Trust. At the end of 2020 I was approached by ministers from The Joy Orphanage in Uganda.

This orphanage is home to 50 children, all of whom have had parents dying from HIV/AIDS, something close to my heart as I trained many years ago to be an HIV/AIDS telephone counsellor. The orphanage has 8 volunteers who help out on a daily basis.

The Joy Orphanage is not merely an orphanage!

The school has 375 orphaned children attending. Those not staying in the orphanage itself are being looked after by elderly relatives in the local villages. In Uganda, 2/3 of the children drop out of education before completing their primary education. 67% of the children living in the Kampala slums do not attend school. Promotion of education is a huge part of the orphanage.

Since 2005, it also campaigns for the rights of all children to live peacefully without exploitation, to benefit from free quality education, to thrive in economic security and justice, and to prosper with access to clean water, good health care, and nutrition.

The orphanage strongly believes that collective action is required to end child marriage, a practice that robs millions of girls of their human rights. Uganda has one of the highest child marriage prevalence in the world.

The orphanage wants to prevent violence against children; physical or emotional, sexual, and economic. When you read about the child sacrifice that goes on it will break your heart.
It is involved in action to end violence against children in families, schools, and communities in the Kabarole district.

The orphanage assists children with disabilities such as hydrocephalus, Spina Bifida, cerebral palsy, and Down Syndrome. Most parents do not understand why their child is disabled or how to properly feed or play with them.

I founded the Hidden Needs Trust 5 years ago to support families with children/young adults under the age of 25 with Special Educational Needs/Learning Difficulties, their parents and carers, and the specialist educational establishments that support them across Dorset and Somerset. For those of you who have listened to the podcast I did prior to 2021 with @MikeMcLaughlin, you will understand that my vision for the future is to get HNT into every county and to forge some international links too. [For more details please listen to the podcast]
At present, however, I cannot give funds away to those in need unless they are in the 2 specified counties.

However, due to the kindness of my local community, I have gathered a shipment together ready to go out to the Orphanage. This shipment contains clothing, bedding, educational toys, outdoor toys and games, towels, beakers and other suitable utensils, and even some items of furniture which will be useful in the school.

I am still collecting on a daily basis donations of goods which means I may be able to send over an even larger load. The shipping company have given me a slightly reduced fee, but I am now trying to get together £5,000 to cover the costs of the shipment and insurance.

If you can help in any way, I would be hugely grateful. If it was not for the volunteers and ministers at the orphanage, many children would be not receiving the help that they so deserve. Many will not survive.

Thank you for your kindness,
