Rachel & Richard Memorial Fund

Donation protected
My name is Sue Nicola and I am a resident of Seaford, NY.  As an active member of the community, I am associated with several local organizations, including the Seaford Wellness Council.

This past year, two local Seaford, New York families suffered tragic and unexpected losses due to medical conditions. Rachel Hayden, daughter of Jim & Jocelyn Hayden, passed in April, and Richard Capo, nephew of Gloria George, passed last December. Both families have been active in the local community for many years, including in the Boy Scouts of America. Among their many interests and callings, Rachel was an EMT in the Seaford Fire Department and Richard was an Eagle Scout.

As an Eagle project, Rachel’s brother Patrick restored and improved the Seaford World War One Memorial, located at the Seaford train station. With the approval and support of the Seaford Wellness Council, a bench missing from the Memorial is to be replaced and memorial plates placed on the new bench and on an existing bench.

This Memorial Bench Fund has been established to reimburse the Wellness Council, who funded the initial purchases of the benches, maintain the Memorial over the next several years, and to purchase memorial nameplates to be placed on the benches in honor of Rachel & Richard. Any funds above and beyond will be donated to the Epilepsy Foundation, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the Seaford Wellness Council.  Ultimately, the funds donated will be withdrawn and distributed to these organizations.

Rachel and Richard never met, yet they had so much in common that it is befitting that they are honored together. They were both part of families that loved them dearly, and provided them with all of the joys of family life. They were both taught to believe in God, and to live helping others, as their parents do. Richard and Rachel struggled with challenges that would have destroyed most. Those challenges did not define them.

We should all learn from that.

They had no idea of the impact they had on others…always the first person to lend a helping hand, to brighten a day with a sincere smile, to warm a room with an infectious laugh, and always ready for a new adventure. They both lit up the room when they entered.

Their legacy is a goal for all of us.

All donations both large and small are truly appreciated and honor the memory of Rachel and Richard.
