Help Stop the Kemptville Prison
The Coalition Against the Proposed Prison needs your help in its continued efforts to stop the construction of a 235-bed “correctional complex” in the rural town of Kemptville.
The proposed new provincial prison is slated to be built on a portion of a 182-acre parcel of land that once housed the Kemptville Agricultural School (1917-2014). This heritage land has a century-long history of farming, education and agrotourism, and is on unceded Algonquin territory. It’s bright future as an agricultural resource will be lost forever should this prison be built. Instead of expanding its ability to incarcerate people, now is the time for the province to undertake justice system reform and invest in the social supports that actually improve community well-being and safety.
The provincial government made the plan behind closed doors without consulting local residents, the municipal government, environmentalists, farmers, or prison justice experts. A lack of transparency has continued to define the government’s behaviour since the plan was announced in August 2020.
Your donation will help cover the cost of multiple Freedom of Information requests filed with the provincial government by local residents who are seeking information that has not been released to the public. The requests submitted to date require the release of documents related to the due diligence activities that must be completed prior to the site design and construction of the proposed prison, and we are concerned about what we are not being told. Examples include: ‘Class Environmental Assessment’, ‘Natural Heritage Survey’, and ‘Planning/Site Serving/Transportation Reporting’. Based on the cost estimates received to date, our current fundraising goal is $3,000, in order that CAPP can support these local residents in accessing this critical information. We will keep you posted should our fundraising needs change.

The Coalition Against the Proposed (CAPP) formed in the fall of 2020 and has been partnering with local residents, stakeholder organizations and other concerned Ontarians ever since to stop the construction of the proposed “Eastern Ontario Correctional Complex” in Kemptville.
