Caleb's ESight Fund

Imagine what your life would be like if you were legally blind.  Our fifteen year old son,  Caleb, lives that reality every day.  Caleb was born at 25 weeks, weighing only 1lb. 13 oz.  During his 14 week stay in the NICU, he survived many life threatening setbacks.  The only one he couldn't beat robbed him of his sight.  He suffers from retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).  He is completely blind in his right eye and severely near- sighted in his left eye.

With vision in only one eye, Caleb has limited peripheral vision and no depth perception.  His corrected vision is 20/200.  His prescription for his contact is -25.   Caleb's field of usable vision is approximately 5 feet.   Beyond that 5 feet is a blurry world that Caleb is missing out on.

Caleb is a remarkable young man that has made the most of life with his visual impairment.  He is a phenomenal student that loves computer science and biology.  He runs cross country and pole vaults for his high school track team.  He recently competed in the Maryland Science Olympiad in Air Trajectory and is an avid reader and gamer.  He loves to do anything that a typical 15 year old boy would do.  His doctors, teachers and anyone who knows him are amazed with what he can do and his positive approach to life.

Our family recently traveled to Philadelphia to try out the eSight glasses.  They were amazing to say the least!  Caleb was able to see details on a car across the hotel parking lot, read the EXIT sign on the other side of the hotel lobby and order a caramel macchiato from a menu board.  He even commented on the high calorie count!  He didn't want to get his hopes up prior to the demonstration, but he was rendered speechless from the results.  We were moved to tears.  It was truly remarkable what the incredible engineers at eSight were able to create.

The only drawback to eSight is it's price tag.   Unfortunately, eSight is not covered by insurance. Those of you that know Rob and I know that we are constantly on the lookout for anything that may help Caleb.  It is a very humbling experience when you find that thing you have been looking for and it is just out of your reach.

Please help us give Caleb the gift of sight.
