Hello, my daughter, Kelcie, has Cerebral Palsy. She is a local professional dancer and teacher's assistant for DanceAbility International.
What Kelcie is fundraising for: Kelcie is trying to get to Rome, Italy next September to attend a month long training to become a certified teacher of the DanceAbility Methodology. She attended a five-day training in June of 2016 and this is the next level of training.
What is the DanceAbility Method: DanceAbility is the study of movement improvisation for all people. The DanceAbility Method of teaching allows everyone to learn together and from each other equally, regardless of ability or disability. Our goal is to create a culture of dance that aims to eliminate isolation and work as a community through expression. We practice the “art of being together”.
DanceAbility International has been a working company for 30 years. There are currently 600 teachers in over 40 countries. Programs may include teaching, training, performance orientation and “informances” - mixed abilities dances shown in public spaces.

Kelcie’s history with DanceAbility: "When I was six years old, I attended a workshop with Alito Alessi, the founder of DanceAbility. A year later my parents took me to a DanceAbility show at Lane Community College and I loved it. Alito and I became friends within those two meetings. I went to every community show that they had for twelve years and every show was so amazing to me. Alito came to my dance studio one time in those twelve years and did an informal performance for our disability day. In twenty-fourteen DanceAbility started offering classes to the community and I took the teen class for three sessions. During the first session, my teacher noticed that I was naturally more of an assistant than a student. About the same time, Alito subbed a class and he was impressed by my movement. He invited me to be in the professional company and I had my first performance with them within two months of starting rehearsals. Two years later I started assisting in classes and the following summer I did the five-day Teacher Orientation."
Attending this training is the next step in Kelcie’s dance career and will give her much more knowledge to work with people in DanceAbility's teen and adult classes. It will also help her understand the Method more and the work that she does with DanceAbility. After this training Kelcie will be able to teach classes based on the Method. This is a huge step for her as a dancer and as a leader. I hope you will consider funding Kelcie’s trip to Rome!
