"The United Ireland Podcast" start-up fund

For some time, I've been toying with the idea of starting a podcast series that delves into the questions that surround the reunification of Ireland. The response I've received from a recent thread (link below) proved to me that there's a huge amount of interest on the subject.

The objective of the podcast is to set out the case for a united Ireland, and to explore what a united Ireland will look like. We intend to demystify the debate and shed light on Ireland's future for our listeners.

The podcast will be a combination of set presentations on a variety of topics (economics of UI, education, health, transport, a united Ireland's place in the world, etc.) as well as address relevant current affairs issues as they occur. The podcast will include guest speakers and hopefully also panel discussions with speakers from a variety of political persuasions discussing their visions for a united Ireland. Striking a gender balance for speakers/contributors will be a priority.

The idea for the podcast was inspired by my time working within the Scottish independence movement. To persuade people of the case for independence, a huge amount of work was done by creative people to illustrate what independence would actually look like, to demystify it, to give folk the confidence to believe that a better Scotland was possible. This was an essential tool for bringing support for independence from around 19-23% at the start of the campaign to 45% in the referendum. Although they didn't achieve a majority, the vivid vision these opinion-formers created of an independent Scotland has lingered on and, I would argue, will form the basis for a successful campaign in the future.

In Ireland, we're starting from a significantly more favourable position than our Scottish cousins. Support for a united Ireland polls around 70% in the Republic, and around the 40% mark in NI. We've much less distance to cover. But we still need to create a vision of a united Ireland, to convince our compatriots of the case for unity and to give them confidence in a united future.

To this end, I hope you'll support me by donating towards the costs of setting up a podcast. From my research, the cost of equipment is around the €125 mark. So if 25 of you donate the price of a pint, we'll have it covered.

Go raibh míle maith agaibh!

Mise le meas,

Caoimhín
