"Camino Al Alma" NYC Dance Th. Choreography Debut

I’m pleased to announce my first NYC full length evening dance theater choreographic premiere Camino al Alma.

The Project:

For my debut dance theater choreographic work, I chose to explore a work that embodies aspects of the trajectory of Hispanic culture in the US. This work presents the core of overcoming assimilation, financial hardship, and discrimination, while regaining the triumph of community courageously confronting societal norms and stereotypes. My evening work will encompass Spanish and Mexican contemporary influenced aesthetic, and theatricality of Latin Jazz, Modern dance accompanied by a live musical score that I will compose. The creative process will empower artists interested in capturing story driven work combining spoken word, dialoguing about the Politics of representation, developing a relationship with musicians while questioning our expectation of social and cultural marginalization and linguistic terrorism as defined by Gloria Anzaldua. My work will also discuss aspects of NYC contemporary dance legend Jose Limon and the trials he faced as a Mexican American that are still relevant today. The work includes dialogues of identity and race encouraging visceral movement for artists to reclaim their uniqueness.

My Inspiration:

Throughout my career, I have been inspired by Mexican and Spanish cultures and Hispanic identity in the US. Because of my admiration and deep connection to my ancestral background I take deep honor in bringing this work to life in such a curious and artistically vibrant community.

Influencers:

When I was introduced to Gloria Anzaldua just three years ago, I knew I would continue evolving ideas she wrote about with my own research and further explore creation of a new dance theater choreographic work questioning borders living between cultures. I will incorporate her points throughout the work and explicitly display the work in both Spanish and English as a way to relate to individuals dealing with translation realities and complexities.

Mexican choreographer José Limón is just one example of many immigrants who came and continue to come from Spanish speaking countries feeling isolated between two cultures. I will include some written language from his unfinished memoir that speak of specific circumstances in his life when he was faced with these difficulties. I chose to speak of his experience because this is a part of his life that has not been explored to the level of its importance.

Collaborators:

Donald McKayle was my choreographic mentor in the beginning stages of creating this work and I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to present this work in his home city. 

I am excited to present my first full length evening theatrical work with my dear friends, musicians and dancers that I have established working relationships with in NYC.

I share a passion and curiosity between connecting dance, music and theater in cross cultural vocabularies in the universal language of performing arts, through message driven work. I will be collaborating with artists who have studied and pursued their art professionally who are stimulated to delve into creative approaches to reach audiences. I celebrate the opportunity to establish a team with such a gifted group of artists for this project who look forward to connecting energies.
