Music matters
Throughout human history, storytelling and music have been foundational to any civilization and culture. Person to person, generation to generation, the wisdom contained within these elements of culture have been passed down so that we can learn from those who came before us.
This is why music matters. It's one of the building blocks of being human and engaging with it can bring joy and serenity into difficult times.
The pandemic problem
When playing improvised music live, I'm engaging with the audience, composing, and performing at the same time. Whether it be at a bar, concert, or wedding, or dance, I can make music that's appropriate for the audience in the moment.
With the decline of social interaction in general during this pandemic, I believe it's even more important to keep making beautiful things together, which is why I've decided to start this project.
What I'm doing about it
Every day during this project, I will check on family and friends as well as read through the headlines to keep up with the world. While reflecting on what I hear and learn, I'll write music to translate the atmosphere of this time into music (first tune here).
As I finish each tune, I'll publish a recording (aided by my friend and co-worker, Georgi Petrov) and sheet music with a Creative Commons License, so that:
(1) the songs will be freely available to listen to, play on instruments at home, remix, arrange for any ensemble
(2)any derivative works will also be freely available, etc.
What this project will do
My goal is to write two tunes per week, for:
(1) anyone who wants to listen to new music during this time
(2) anyone who wants to use this music for another project (concerts, videos, etc.)
If we are able to reach our funding goal in the next 30 days, those funds will pay for everyday living expenses of two working musicians while our regular income stream is unavailable, preventing the need to drain our under-sized emergency funds or borrow money.
