Quality Books for Kiddos

Hello! My name is Jill Chatzinoff and I am a reading intervention teacher at a public charter school in Washington, D.C.

If there's one thing I've learned in the past 2.5 years as a reading teacher it's that investment is the key to success. Getting students invested in their own learning is a huge win that opens up an endless sea of opportunities for kids.

In order to inspire kids to engage and invest in their own reading growth, the first big step is investing them in the books they read. Recently, I have had a hard time doing this, as many of the stories I find that are aligned to my students' misunderstandings are black and white paper books that they know I printed from a computer. Though these are good stories, I immediately see the potential for investment drop in their faces when they see that I have yet another black and white, self-stapled book for them to read.

But, when my kids see that I have 6 beautiful copies of a physical, bound, colorful book, one for each of them, their faces immediately light up. And that's when I know that a spark of investment has been ignited. There's just something so special and truly inspiring about being in the presence of students who are genuinely excited to read, and that's what these books do for them.

That's where you come in! The best way to help kids learn how to read is to get them excited about reading and that is my goal for this project. There are so many wonderfully creative short stories that align perfectly to the bottom lines and key skills that students are working towards achieving in small group reading at school. I am hopeful that with these new books, my students will be able to continue developing a long-standing love of reading that will carry them through the rest of their lives.

If you support my project, your money will go directly towards purchasing 21 sets of books (6 of each book) that can be used across my school to get students invested in their learning and make them excited to grow as readers.

As American educator and author Mary Ellen Chase once said, “There is no substitute for books in the life of a child.”

I appreciate your support!

Thank you,
Jill Chatzinoff
