If you had ever met Devan Garrett (age 26), you would know that he is a warm & loving, young man who gives selflessly of himself to just about everyone that he meets. He is also a young man who is just starting out in life . . . a young man contemplating marriage, family & more.
On Friday, August 14th, 2015, our family received the most devastating news of our lives. Our handsome, young son, Devan, was diagnosed with Stage IV Adenocarcinoma of the Lung with Metastasis throughout. Currently, Devan is at the Shands Cancer Center in Gainesville, Florida where he is undergoing further diagnostic testing (molecular profiling & a bone scan are next) with a plan to start Radiation Therapy tomorrow in an attempt to shrink the tumors that have spread to his brain. Chemo & immunotherapy will follow.
Devan will not be able to work while undergoing the extensive treatment plan that has been scheduled for him & this poses a huge financial burden for him & his family as Devan lost both his job & his insurance coverage recently. As such, the kind folks at Shands Cancer Center have arranged a meeting with a Case Manager tomorrow in an attempt to get him qualified for some kind of health care assistance. Sadly, we have been forewarned to expect a denial & to be prepared for fight during the appeals process.
This is going to be the most trying time in Devan’s life, but we have faith that he is going to overcome this difficult time with the love & support that he receives from family & friends. Still, battling cancer is a very long, arduous & expensive journey. As such, every contribuation, no matter the size, will make an enormous difference.
