My name is Olivia Sommers and I am raising money for my best friend, Monica Lupou.
In April of this year, Monica woke up one morning and could not put pressure on her right leg. The following three months consisted of multiple surgeries and biopsies; totaling over 30 days spent in the hospital. By June 9th, she was no longer able to work. On August 1st, at the age of 28, Monica was finally diagnosed with a Malignant Giant Cell Tumor of the Bone. The tumor progressed into an Osteosarcoma of the right femur. Since then, Monica has had surgery to remove part of her femur and spent 6 weeks in a back/leg brace followed by another 6 weeks of non-weight-bearing on her leg to ensure it healed properly. Prior to starting chemotherapy, Monica went through the IVF process to freeze her eggs.
In October, Monica was finally able to receive her first round of chemotherapy treatment. In the days following that treatment, Monica’s left lung collapsed. She needed a chest tube to remove the air around the collapsed lung. Several days later, both of Monica’s lungs collapsed and she found herself back in the hospital, preparing for yet another surgery. This time, she underwent bilateral pleurodesis to resolve the collapsed lungs. However, during the surgery, doctors removed nodules on her lungs and the biopsy confirmed that the cancer had indeed spread. Monica was diagnosed with Stage 4 Sarcoma of the lungs.
Monica’s strength during this journey has been nothing short of astonishing. She continues to impress everyone with her courage, even in the wake of all this heartbreaking news. She has the love and support of her family, fiancé, and her dear friends who have stood by her side. She has a long journey ahead and will continue fighting every day. Monica will continue receiving chemotherapy through Northwestern Medicine and has recently been accepted for peer-to-peer consultation and treatment with MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. MDA has had very good results in treating this type of cancer and she is grateful to have been accepted to their program.
Many people have asked what they can do for Monica, and I can’t think of a better way to help a friend that has given so much to everyone these many years. All the money raised will go directly toward Monica’s medical expenses and expenses related to any travel to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
