Sonya Hamilton Mc Closkey is 35 years old.
Sonya is a wife to Michael and a mother to 5 young children , Jasmaine, Rihanna , Kailin, Sorcha and Miyah.
For the past 2 years Sonya has been forward and back to both her doctor and local hospital with a persistent pain in her side. Initially It was thought Sonya had pulled a muscle. When the pain stayed and Sonya returned to the doctor and hospital she was told it was everything from IBS to fibromyalgia. Meanwhile Sonya continued with her busy family life taking painkillers to get her through the day.
Sonya was brought by ambulance to her hospital in July 2018, the pain was so severe.
Sonya’s pain was still not investigated , rather put on a waiting list to be called as an outpatient. At this point Sonya was having severe bowel issues affecting every aspect of her daily living. It was suggested at this point following a clear colonoscopy that she may visit a dietician to manage her bowel issues . The pain in Sonya’s side at this point was that severe she could not sleep at night.
Sonya was sent by her GP to the hospital in February 2019. Her doctor was concerned that recent bloods showed a high liver count and a weight loss of 3 stone.
Sonya was admitted at this stage, yet once again was sent home and wait to see a consultant at a later date in the outpatients clinic. Sonya was still in severe pain at this point and still had severe bowel issues.
Sonya had lost almost 3 stone.
Sonya found a lump in her breast in April 2019 and returned to her doctor who immediatly sent her to the breast clinic.
Following a mamogram and biopsy it was confirmed that Sonya had aggressive breast and lymph node cancer. They were confident they could start treatment and hopefully get sonya through this devastating time for both Sonya and her family.
Sonya had to have further scans following this diagnosis including the area which has caused so much pain this past 2 years.
following the PET scan in Dublin it was confirmed that along with Sonya’s initial diagnosis , she also has pancreatic, liver and lung cancer. It was suggested that the pancreas was the initial cancer , the same place where sonya has had the pain the past 2 years.
Sonya has spent the past few weeks on an oncology ward and is separated from her family. Her youngest four children are too young to visit the ward she is on.
Sonya was taken to Galway hospital on 18 June with the hope of getting a stent in due to blockages in the liver .
Sonya has been in touch with Oncologica who are based in the UK and who will take a sample of Sonya’s biopsies and analyze them.
At the moment this is Sonya’s only choice to give her a fighting chance.
Unfortunately Sonya at the moment does not meet the requirements for chemotherapy.
This has been such a devastating blow to Sonya, Michael their children , parents, family and friends.
Everyone who has ever met Sonya knows she is a giver. She gives her everything to her family and everyone she knows. Her life is completely selfless. Her children are her priority . Trying to fight this is all Sonya can do.
This page was set set up to help Sonya and Michael - to get Sonya’s sample over to the UK, this alone is two thousand euro
at the moment there is no income as Michael gave up his main source of income the day they received this horrific news to be at home with their children and be there for Sonya.
