My cousin Joe Metzger passed away this past week. This is a huge, unforeseen financial burden on his family at the moment. Any donation is very appreciated.
Here's his story:
Joey struggled with addiction to alcohol and drugs in his early life. Joey recounted his story with me many times. He was homeless at one point, sleep on friend's couches, stole money and possessions, and looked anywhere for his next high.
After many years, he finally got clean. His saving grace was helping others become clean and his passion for food.
Joey went to culinary school before his addiction and he used his passion for cooking to get out of his addiction.
He opened 3 restaurants in STL: 7 West Bar and Grill, The Cobblestone Eatery, and Dive Bar. These were his babies. If Joe could keep these going, he too can keep going.
When COVID hit, it was a silent struggle but, we all knew he was hurting to keep these places alive.
He was creative and innovative... just like every other business owner this year. His family slowly saw him slip away and he had his first drink two months ago at our grandfather's funeral.
After a series of heartbreaking events in his life the past months, Joe was relapsing and passed away on December 13th.
I hope Joey's story can touch other people; whether you are a business owner, struggling with addiction, or an anti-lockdown warrior.
