My sister turned 42 in June, 2017; she also was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in June, 2017 and eventually weeks later diagnosed with a later stage of colon cancer that spread to her ovaries.  Hearing this news brought me back to 1990 when she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes as a freshman in high school.

Type 1 Diabetes completely disrupted her life.  She automatically felt inadequate & different compared to her peers at 15.  She was a teen with diabetes and struggled to manage her highs and lows while she navigated through her high school years – late night studying, sports, friend drama and managing her weight.  Obviously it did not stop in high school!  When she joined me at Purdue University, we got to know the ERs in Lafayette, IN fairly well.   I hated what diabetes was doing to her life!

BUT, diabetes made her into a warrior of the wounded.  She successfully obtained a BA from the Purdue Nursing School and has since dedicated her life as a neonatal nurse, taking care of precious lives born way too early.  Those babies are her babies

She’s also the “dog lady” and known to take any rescue into her home.  She started with healthy chihuahuas
and now only accepts abandoned and/or wounded dogs.  They are her children too!

She married a fellow type 1 diabetic and later expanded her family to 3 beautiful children.  Her oldest child, now 11, was diagnosed at 6, with Type 1 diabetes.  She feels extreme guilt for passing the gene along and carries that burden with her each and every day.  She knows what lies ahead for her daughter in managing diabetes day in, day out.

As her life progressed, her husband sustained injuries on the job and has remained out of work for several years.  But as with any, warrior, she took on more shifts, working 50 hour weeks while still playing mom; checking homework every night, and taking on roles like soccer coach & girl scout troop leader.    She does whatever it takes to keep her household running, all her babies healthy and doggies safe.  She doesn’t let any “thing” kill her.

Then, on June 2017… her birthday month…she gets a HUGE BLOW, cancer.    She is worried about surviving and living her life with her family, saving more babies and dogs!   She is selfless and just deserves a little help, something she would never ask for in a million years.  I want her to focus on beating cancer.  And not all the medical and life bills that continue to pile up.  I’m asking for $1,000/month  for a year to help with her treatment and life bills.  It will be a yearlong fight…

So if you are/or know:   a mom, a nurse, a person living with type 1 diabetes, a mom with a child with diabetes, the breadwinner mom, a neonatal nurse, a dog lover & rescuer, a Purdue alum, the youngest sibling, a girl scout troop leader, a soccer coach, a best friend, a daughter…

She is just like you – SO PLEASE CONSIDER TO HELP, every little bit helps, nothing is too small.  THANK YOU…

Peace be with you XXXOOO
