Putting STEM content on TV for Ghanaian Children

Donation protected
Every Ghanaian deserves the opportunity to experience an exciting and inspiring science and mathematics education. By supporting GH4STEM, you will help showcase how innovative students can be with everyday items in demonstrating scientific concepts and principles. During this time when schools have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, putting GH4STEM on national TV will be a great learning tool and an excellent source of motivation to encourage self directed learning and discovery among students.

According to the report titled Inspiring Science and Mathematics in Basic Schools (2014), the West Africa Senior School Certificate Exam results for senior high school students showed poor performance in integrated science and core mathematics, with about 60% of students obtaining poor grades.

To address the challenge of poor learning outcomes in STEM, GH4STEM is using televised and social media to bring innovative science experiments as teaching and learning aids for students with limited access to school labs, and especially during school closure. Our ultimate goal is to make practical STEM teaching and learning the norm. By supporting this campaign, your money will go towards paying to have this innovative show broadcast on national TV, freely to all children across Ghana.

Junior Experimenters of Science (JUNEOS) is a national science project/experiment challenge that integrates video, storytelling, and the practical application of STEM theories. The student-led experiments are based on Ghana’s national curriculum and help students develop other key skills including critical thinking, collaboration and teamwork, creativity, problem solving and innovation. JUNEOS is built on two key ideas: use of audio-visual teaching and learning materials, and transforming the teaching of STEM to make it practical, affordable, and locally relevant. The experiments emphasize on real-world application by using locally available materials.

Using its private resources, GH4STEM finished nationwide filming of The JUNEOS Challenge in August 2019, featuring 100 schools drawn from all the administrative regions of the country. Girls comprised 65% of student experimenters. This emphasis on a wider representation by girls is an intentional measure to address the worldwide under-representation of girls and women in STEM.

How the videos work:
a) A teacher selects an experiment that is part of the school’s curriculum
b) A student conducts the experiment and explains each step of the process. Having a student explain the experiment makes the content relatable and makes the learning process less intimidating.
c) A voiceover explains key points of the experiment and a teacher shares how the experiment is applicable in real life.

The student-led experiment videos are currently ready to air on national TV. GH4STEM is seeking £13,600 to finance the broadcast of these science experiments on national TV. On free to air TV, we can reach millions of children across Ghana with quality learning content that they can replicate at home.

GH4STEM is a Ghana-based social enterprise committed to creating resources and broadening access to practical STEM through teaching and learning in ways that are compelling, relevant and fun. We appreciate your support to help us make this content freely available for children all over the country
