#Punchit for Greg Duerksen

As you've likely heard, Husband, Father, Friend, Brother, volunteer firefighter Greg Duerksen was diagnosed with Leukemia this Spring.

His positive attitude in light of this life changing news has been nothing less than inspiring to everyone his story has reached. Through this challenging time, since the shocking spring diagnosis, the only thing Greg and his wife Lisa have asked is that we love and treasure every moment with the most important people in our lives.

#Punchit represents Greg's resilience and positive outlook. The morning after his diagnosis, on the day of his emergency transfer to Vancouver General Hospital, Greg woke up in hospital and posted: "Just like every day, I get up, I make the bed, I have a shower, get dressed and then tackle whatever might be in front of me. Speed bumps ahead but I'm gonna punch it because suspension's cheap!"

Well, suspension is cheap, but fighting cancer is not. What Greg, Lisa and their kids Aiden and Paige haven't mentioned is the out of pocket and out of savings since April. The family income is slashed; a requirement to stay near the hospital has necessitated the rental of an astronomically expensive furnished suite in Vancouver; travel costs including a myriad of ferry trips are only some of the costs in front of them.

They now face several more months in Vancouver for his STEM cell transplant and they need financial assistance. The family has recently been notified that Worksafe BC has denied Greg's claim for coverage under the firefighters Presumptive Coverage Act. They agreed that he had served enough time to qualify for coverage, but argued that he is too young for Leukemia!

Greg's family understands what is at stake better than most. In 1990, as a young teenager, Greg lost his father to cancer. This loss has played a large part in developing Greg's passion for life and in propelling his relentless desire to spend every moment doing something he loves with someone he loves. At his passing, Greg's father was 43 years old... Greg was 43 when diagnosed.
In August, Greg #punchedit over that foreboding speed bump as he celebrated his 44th birthday! Please stand with him in expecting many, many more!

This goal will help meet some immediate needs, but our hope is that your generosity will smash this goal and help make this family financially whole. Greg and Lisa have enough on their plates right now, let's take the financial concerns off their list!

Please consider giving.
