Pull up Mary Griffin and beat NET

Donation protected
Mary G.  can best be described as “driven charisma.” Her focused intensity for life is palatable and powerful. Positive energy, an enabler, and strategic in her actions on and off the lacrosse field. Impactful friend, impact player.
Mary finds ways to get things done. Returning from winter break, everyone was laughing and grateful to hear about her newly created spray tan business, “Mary G. Sprays,” to ensure her VT Lacrosse team has a glow in the Blacksburg winter.
Lifting the team and optimizing every opportunity, Mary is a treasure and joy to all that are blessed to know her.
It is now our time to lift up Mary. Last week, Mary was diagnosed with NET (A neuroendocrine tumor (NET)). This is a rare cancer for teenagers, a link for general information is: https://rarediseases.info.nih.gov/diseases/13445/neuroendocrine-tumor
We will have more information as Mary completes PET scans and meets with surgeons and oncologists for treatment decisions.   On top of her cancer diagnosis, Mary also tested positive for Coronavirus. Mary and her family have been highly impacted by Corona, their selfless approach and willingness to always support others is why we are asking for your support and prayers. It’s our turn to lift up Mary.   Thank you for supporting Mary G. and her family.

Donations will be directly fully to Mary G. and her family.

(Message from Griffin Family):
WOW !!!! We are so overwhelmed by the love and support Mary and our family has received. We are truly humbled .  I want to let everyone know what has been going on since we got the diagnosis 2 weeks ago that Mary has a type of cancer know as “NET”. Mary has been traveling back and forth from Va Tech to Baltimore for doctors visits and then as soon as possible back to her “Happy Place”: Blacksburg!

We have currently met with two different oncology groups and have learned so much about NET Tumors and are amazed at the unique type of cancer this is as well as it’s long term implications. As of now Mary has had numerous tests including blood work, a cat scan and a biopsy. We are still awaiting a special type of Pet Scan called a dotatate scan. The dotatate scan is a specialized Pet Scan which will let us know if and to what extent this type of cancer has spread. We do know that this tumor originated in the pancreas and has invaded her spleen. We are hoping that tomorrow’s scan is positive and we see minimal spread to other organs and areas( Fingers Crossed!).

We have encountered some issues with insurance coverage since some of the test Mary requires are specialized and we are having difficulty getting authorization. Thankfully the insurance that Mary has through Va tech has covered many of these test but once we move forward with the next phase of Mary’s care with the doctor’s in Baltimore region everyone’s generosity and donations will be imperative to ensure Mary will continue to get the care she needs.  We are anticipating that the next step of Mary’s journey will be surgery to remove the tumor.   Mary’s doctors state that this will most likely occur in the next 2 to 3 weeks.

Mary has been amazing through this experience and continues to smile and laugh while making all around her feel comfortable and at ease with her diagnosis. Mary will ask the doctors questions and make sarcastic remarks that have gotten even the most serious of surgeons to laugh. Example; one doctor explained that she would need her spleen ,gall bladder and part of her pancreas removed, Mary just laughed and asked if there were any other organs he may want to remove while in there or was this it? I love this girl!!!!

Please know how much we truly appreciate the amazing support and all the generous contributions that everyone has given. Mary is so fortunate to have have everyone of you in her life. Thank You All  I will post again with the Dotatate Pet Scan results.
