PSP-SL NASA student launch competition

Donation protected
Every year we construct a high-powered rocket for a project that provides NASA with new ideas it can utilize to reach its future goals. We are challenged to design a rocket that can fly to a predetermined altitude and meet additional yearly requirements announced at the beginning of the competition in August. In the 2018-2019 competition, the team was asked to create a rover which could autonomously deploy from the launch vehicle and collect a soil sample after a successful landing.

PSP-SL pushes the limit not only in its engineering design, but in making sure to create a diverse team with a unique culture. Our team is comprised of about 30 active members, varying from year to year. This competition held by NASA allows PSP-SL to have a broad range of students in academia, team members study a variety of engineering disciplines such as: Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and First Year Engineering. This competition requires us to know - or more often, learn - a wide range of skill sets. The project also requires the organization of funding and community service efforts, which means that our team members are getting a large amount of interdisciplinary experience and that majors outside of engineering could certainly find a place on our team. This past year we had five active female members on the team, four of which will be filling roles in our nine-person leadership team for the 2019-2020 competition. As a result, we anticipate even more female involvement next year, increasing the diversity of the team and potentially encouraging more female interest in aerospace.

After testing to complete the NASA requirements, our team successfully launched the full-scale rocket three times, including at the Huntsville competition at the end of the 2018-2019 competition in April. After testing to complete the NASA requirements, our team successfully launched the full-scale rocket three times, including in Huntsville at the end of the 2018-2019 competition in April.  Our team members are dedicated to making this success into a string of successes, and since funding has been one of the team’s longest-lasting issues we are reaching out for support. For our Student Launch team to achieve continued success we are seeking financial support to purchase materials, experiment, and travel.

We all thank you very much for your time and consideration. If you have any questions about our team or what we do, we would be more than happy to answer these as best as possible. Your support means a great deal to us!
