Help us care for 12 additional horses in Wales!

Donation protected
We are Springwood Sanctuary, a non-profit horse sanctuary near Carmarthen, South Wales.

We have recently taken on a second herd of horses and ponies from West Sussex that were desperately searching for a home. This means we have doubled the number of equines at our sanctuary!

We need your help and support to ensure all our beautiful rescued and rehabilitated horses, ponies and donkeys can continue to enjoy a natural and truly peaceful existence. The arrival of the ‘Equine Gentling’ herd from Sussex has been wonderful and they are enjoying exploring the land! However, we now have the huge task of raising enough money to keep them safe, happy and healthy here in Wales, and to make sure this can be their forever home.

We rely entirely on donations, sponsorship, and on our team of volunteers. This new venture means we need help to cover these costs for the next 3 months:

  • Fencing: £1515
  • Contingency Vet fees: £1,000
  • Health Supplements - herbs, first aid remedies, joint supplements: £225
  • Hoof trimming: £480
  • Equine Dentist: £240

About the West Sussex Herd

The Equine Gentling herd is made up of 12 horses and ponies that came to them for a variety of different reasons. Some were rescued, some were taken on when they became too much for their owners and some came from conservation grazing herds that were being re-homed.
They have been grazing on both gifted and short-term rented land for around six years. Despite years of trying as a CIC to find a permanent home in Sussex, they have reached a point where they can no longer continue. The extreme weather conditions have left the herd needing to have their natural grazing supplemented with hay, and despite many generous land owners lending them small parcels of land over the years they had ended up on rented land. These two factors have led to it being no longer financially possible to support these 12 wonderful horses and ponies.

They are a beautiful bonded herd, each with their own unique story and personality and to see them settling in at Springwood is simply wonderful.

About Springwood Sanctuary

Our sanctuary provides 80 acres of stunning hillside and valley. The wild medicinal plants and large expanses of rewilded meadow grasses allow our herds to conservation graze and enjoy the freedom to roam naturally. The many established native trees and hedges enable them to explore and find natural shelter. We ensure their safety by fencing the river and other boundaries.

The horses, ponies, and donkeys we have rescued have sadly experienced extreme past trauma - many of them were due to be put to sleep because they were unable to be rehabilitated in conventional ways after they had been deemed to no longer 'serve their purpose' in the racing, polo, petting farm and riding school industries. Our many years of holistic equine experience, combined with animal healing and communication techniques, have enabled a unique and incredibly effective way of rehabilitation for even the most troubled souls - the herds now live peacefully and thrive in both mind, body and spirit. They are not re-homed or used in any way. With adequate funding we can ensure they all have a forever home at our sanctuary.

You can also become a Springwood sponsor and support these two herds of 23 horses, ponies and donkeys through our website, as well as find out more about the equines and what we do.

Thank you so much, from the bottom of our hearts, for any donation - however small. Together, we can make a difference, and make sure we have enough funds to offer the West Sussex herd a permanent home here at Springwood Sanctuary.
