Wild Dolphin Education

The Dolphin Project (TDP) is an ALL-volunteer, non-profit (501c3), Research, Conservation and Education Organization, founded in 1989 by renowned marine scientists. We document the wild estuarine Bottlenose dolphins on the coasts of Georgia and lower South Carolina in order to track their health and abundance. If there are health issues for the dolphins, we humans could have problems too. We eat the same food and share the same water. The viable data and photographs of dorsal fins (used for identification) are submitted to two databases at Duke University...MABDC (Mid-Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin Catalog) and OBIS-SEAMAP (Oceanic Biogeographic Informational System - Spatial Ecological Analysis of Megavertebrate Populations).  Researchers access these databases to conduct studies for health assessments, behaviors, abundance, etc. The citizen science submitted to these databases by The Dolphin Project assists Universities, Government agencies and independent studies.

TDP volunteers collaborate with numerous environmental groups to protect the shared coastal environment of the dolphins and humans against potential threats. In 2015 TDP co-authored a research paper with Savannah State University. We hope to generate many more in the near future.

One of our goals is to conduct salinity and PH testing during our dolphin Photo-ID research surveys. Drought and excessive rain seriously affects all the wildlife in our estuaries and obviously  the salt marsh itself. Ultimately we are affected as well. We need to know the impacts. Too much or too little affects the food chain for the fish and dolphins. We require $5,000 for testing equipment to supply TDP research boats.

No member of The Dolphin Project is paid. We are ALL volunteers. All funds received go directly into our research and education programs. Any amount you can donate will be great appreciated.
