Last week a report came out stating that approximately 13,000 Black families on the south and west sides of Chicago are in danger of losing their homes due to delinquent property taxes.
We know there are a number of factors contributing to this dynamic (economic instability, joblessness, market inflation, inaccessible or the inequitable distribution of resources, etc.)--all of which have been exacerbated by the pandemic.
We’re also seeing a sweeping trend across the city where gentrification is causing a mass pushout of Black residents on the south and west sides. Our fear is these tax delinquencies will perpetuate that model and ultimately inflate homelessness and the mass exodus of Black families from Chicago.
To help mitigate this issue, we’d like to raise money to assist families in danger of losing their homes. Not only are we are going to pay their delinquent taxes, we are going to teach them to appeal this predatory taxation.
