Let's shed the light of education on forgotten dreams

The global pandemic COVID-19 has incommoded the whole world. Bangladesh is not exempted from it. When the entire country was trying to cope with the outbreak of COVID-19; another adversity, the most powerful cyclone Amphan had struck the nation. The cyclone destroyed many establishments including educational institutes in villages; even torn down power lines and flooding over large tracts of lands.  DELUTI SECONDARY SCHOOL is one of those establishments which has been destroyed by cyclone Amphan.

Background of the School
Let’s go 20 years back, Deluti is a rural area located in Paikgacha, Khulna, Bangladesh. Most of the people are farmers, day laborers and fish farmers who have been in mud houses in Deluti. Majority of the villagers are living under poverty and can barely make a living. There weren’t even any Secondary schools within 50 km radius. So, the children of these low income families had no access to basic education; but they had a dream to be literate and build a life for themselves and their parents. Therefore, some local leaders took the matter on their own hands and raised funds to build a school. Finally, the school was built in the year 2000, teachers got recruited, students and the locals were happy. They saw the light of hope after the darkness.

Then in 2020, where the global pandemic COVID-19 is dictating the whole world, Bangladesh faced its worst nightmare, the cyclone Amphan. The only hope for the villagers, their dream school got destroyed by the cyclone as well as their houses. The school was built on a weak structure and hasn’t been renovated properly ever since it started its operations.

Currently the school has 200 students. Despite the condition of the school, the school has a 100% pass rate on its Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination and 2 of the students from the school got GPA 5/ A+ this year. Students in the past got admitted to Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and Dhaka University too. The school is free for all the students as it’s hard for their families to pay, even the teachers are mostly volunteers.

Words from Headmaster
The headmaster Shubrata Kumer has been with the school since the beginning, with a master in Chemistry, he had a ton of better opportunities. But then, he had the urge to do something for his community, so he turned down all big opportunities and decided to help the underprivileged people by teaching their children. He feels motivated with the hope that one day his students will get success in their lives and recognize him as their headmaster. Thus, he will feel successful.

“Even though my children cannot afford tuition classes or expensive books like city kids to get good marks, they are still getting 96s and 97s in tough subjects” - Shubrata Kumer, Headmaster, Deluti Secondary School

He’s motivating his teachers as they are losing hope too in this pandemic. He also wants his school to be a role model for others.

The school was built with the hope that someday these children will help their parents to get out of poverty.

Importance of Education can be felt in every part of the world, a society considers education as the basic of attaining prosperity. The villagers believe that this educational institute is the source to end the miserable life of poverty and to enlighten every kid in the village of Deluti. Kandari  in collaboration with Alokito Shishu  have planned to rebuild this school for the villagers. Rebuilding the school would require a large amount of resources and effort. Let’s donate any amount possible to support this project and help the villagers to fulfill their dreams. You could be a part of showing a ray of hope to the people of Deluti.
