Project Oyam

Introduction and background

It's my Dad's 50th birthday today and his only wish this year is to give back to the school that made him the person he is today.  Chakra Khatri comes from Oyam, a remote village in eastern Nepal and attended Shreegupte Shwor School, Oyam, from 1978 to 1988.  Despite a severe lack of resources, my father was top of his classes all the way through school and often credits the support from his dedicated teachers as a major reason for his success.  Upon completion of his GCSEs, my father enlisted into the British Army, the Brigade of Gurkhas and he is currently serving as a Major in 9 Regiment, the Royal Logistic Corps.

In order to give back to the entity that gave him such a great start in life, we aspire to build a library, an IT lab and hostel rooms at Shreegupte Shwor School to advance the school's educational facilities and hopefully create the same opportunities for many more children.

Every few years when our family go back to Nepal, we visit the school and my father's face lights up with emotion and gratitude.  It would be my proudest moment to make his vision become a reality and give thanks to the place where his roots were developed.  We donate money to the School every year, rewarding the most underprivileged and highest-achieving students with funds to support their educational needs, for example, to buy their books or school lunches.  This time, we want to go even bigger, delivering a far-reaching project that helps 500 students.

The Plan:

Construct a building that will contain an IT lab, a Public library on the ground floor and hostel rooms on the first floor to enhance the educational opportunities for approximately 500 students at Shreegupte Shwor School.

Needed:

1. Purchasing of the land
2. Construction of the building
3. Facilities and resources, e.g. furniture, books, computers etc.

Benefits:

-  Allowing the children at Shreegupte Shwor School, Oyam to experience a proper IT education and become a part of the technological era
- Books and resources in the library will enhance and enrich the students' educational experiences and knowledge
- Those who have to travel 2 hours just to get to school in all weather conditions will have the opportunity to become boarders
- Creation of job opportunities for the community via building/maintaining the facilities

The estimated budget to complete the project is £70,000. We have a number of charitable organisations and individual donors leaning in to support. However, we need as many donations as possible to be able to complete the project. Our plan is to do a charitable run and organise multiple charitable events including a ball (this was due to happen in April 2020 but has been delayed due to COVID), and use this Go Fund Me page to invite anyone who is able to help this cause.

Any donations would be greatly appreciated!  Every little helps.

Timeline:

The project will take a couple of years, and we would love to attain the land required for the buildings by Spring next year. We will post pictures and videos of the project as we make any developments so you can see exactly where your donations are going.

With your help, we can build a future for these children.

Thank you for your support.
