According to UNESCO the benefits of increased literacy are numerous and include:  increased political participation; promotion of peace; expansion of democracy; social benefits including cultural transformation; increased life expectancy, reduced child mortality and improved children's health; economic growth; participation in household finances, gender equality, etc. http://www.unesco.org/education/GMR2006/full/chapt5_eng.pdf

When we started Project 99A in Aug. of 2019 our goal was to collect 9,999 books and distribute the books within the year to those in need.  Through the generosity of our family, friends and neighbours we have collected in excess of 14,999 books in just five short months.

Some of our other initiatives include hosting a successful 2019 United Nations International Friendship Day celebration where we featured local authors and illustrators.  Recently we partnered with a local high school on a book swap event and we have also given books to organizations supporting those in need within York Region (Ontario).  Specifically we have given books to The Richmond Hill Food Bank, The Rose of Sharon for Young Mothers, Music For Young Children, Crosby Heights Public School (YRDSB), etc.  Internationally, we have shared our books with those in need in Florida, Malawi (Africa), Trinidad & Tobago, Cambodia and the British Virgin Islands.

The following quotation by Lynden Smith, the Founding President of The British Virgin Islands Reading Council provides some insight into the situation the country is still dealing within their libraries.

"In August [of 2018] a great flood devastated most of the territory to be followed in September by two Category 5 hurricanes which destroyed houses, boats, schools, businesses, air and sea ports.  The schools suffered great losses ... books, materials, and structures.  This has been the worst devastation that I have ever seen or even heard my parents talk about."

Here are a few ways we have tried to help:

- With the support of Blue Nile Transport and the members of The Road Town Rotary Club we shipped 40 cubic feet of books to The British Virgin Islands to help the residents and citizens of The British Virgin Islands re-stock their bookshelves.

- With the support of The People Bridge Charitable Foundation and Business & Office Centro Inc. we gifted a book titled, "The Story of Our School" written by Kamala-Jean Gopie (Founder of the school) to the primary students attending The Gopie Community School in Malawi in the hope that it would ignite a lifelong love of reading.   The book has been translated into the local language (Chichewa) and will be gifted to the students when Ms. Gopie visits the school in the spring of 2020.

- With the support of eZone and Ms. Maria Chong Ton we shipped a skid of over 999 books to Trinidad & Tobago which will be distributed to adults and children in need by The Foundation for the Enhancement and Enrichment of Life (F.E.E.L.).

Each time someone receives a book the response is the same--sincere gratitude.  At Project 99A we know that a single book can have a profound impact on one's thinking.

Please consider helping Project 99A elevate global literacy rates by making a donation to this GoFundMe campaign.   For every $9.99 donated a sticker will be placed in a book thanking you for your commitment to global literacy.  Please note, as a volunteer organization 100% of our financial donations support Project 99A literacy oriented initiatives.

P.S.  Book donations are welcome.  Please visit our website at:  www.Project99A.ca  (under Events) for a list of upcoming book drives.
