Professor Keir Lewis COVID-19 Research Fund

Sadly on January 25th 2021 a loving Wife, Mother, Nana, Sister and a friend to many lost her battle with COVID-19. Lynne’s consultant at Prince Philip Hospital was Professor Keir Lewis, Respiratory Lead at Hywel Dda University Health Board. During her time in hospital, Lynne was eager to be part of this real-time research being undertaken and was keen to donate blood to help with this wonderful cause. We have decided as a family that donations in lieu of flowers to Lynne’s memory should go to Professor Keir Lewis COVID-19 Research Fund based at Prince Philip Hospital.
Below is a brief summary of the excellent work being carried out by Prof Lewis and his team at Prince Philip Hospital:
”I have been so deeply impressed by Lynne and many people like her. Despite being so unwell, they have donated blood and helped us in many research projects. Our patients help us better understand this terrible disease and will help others.
Here in Prince Philip Hospital, we are recruiting into the large studies that you hear about on TV, but we are the only hospital in the world doing 4 other projects:
- Collecting blood for a COVID bio bank where researchers of the future can access samples to develop faster tests and try new drugs
- Working with researchers in Porton Down (Army research centre in England) to examine why some people’s immune systems behave so differently to others to the virus. This could help us understand what drugs might suit different people
- Testing brand new CPAP machines (made in Ammanford) to help people breath
- Testing hand-held ultrasound scanners and artificial intelligence to detect early lung changes (without x-rays and radiation)”
Too many people have lost family, friends and loved ones to COVID-19. As a family, we know how important it was for Lynne to be a part of this research. Lynne was a nurse for 30 years and we know as a family that she would be honoured to continue helping others fighting this terrible virus.
