Hi, my name is Shannon. I am a 33 year old mother to a 2 yr old daughter and also 10 weeks pregnant with my 2nd baby.
After being sick for a month with bronchitis, I had unbearable chest pains, shortness of breath, and fast heart beats, and rushed to ER. Thank god for the ER doctors advice to get a CT scan, I found out I have 2 blood clots in both of my lungs, called Pulmonary Embolism. I have been in the hospital for 1 week, and have been told I need injections of Heparin, blood thinner until well after my due date in august or my life is at risk and it is deadly for the baby as well. Sadly I have been ready to discharge since the middle of last week, but due to Anthem Blue Medi-Cal refusing to cover my Lovenox Heparin shot injections, I had to remain in hospital and switch over to just Heparin shots. I was told by doctors that lovenox is not covered but the heparin shots will be covered. After 4 more days in the hospital and confirmation from Dr, I was ready to go home and pick up my prescriptions. Sadly for the 2nd time my insurance refused to cover my heparin shot injections.
I am at a complete loss and in need of some HELP. Either heparin or lovenox are the ONLY 2 shot injections that a pregnant woman can safely take for blood clots while pregnant, pill forms are NOT safe while pregnant. My insurance and hospital seem to be allowing me to take these shots while in the hospital, but refuse to cover them out of the hospital. Which seems so insane. I am now a high risk pregnant woman with clots in my lungs that require life saving shots in order to live and my insurance refuses to cover them. We have appealed this refusal to the hospital as well as the insurance company, but are not resolving this issue. Please any help is most appreciated as this is a life or death matter.
These injections I have to give myself 2 times a day, are very costly. Depending whichever the 2 injection brands I can find at any pharmacy, it will cost $1000-$1500 per month. With my baby due in August and Doctors say I will need to still have injections at least 6 weeks after the baby is born. Fingers crossed these clots are pregnant related but if not, I may need blood thinners the rest of my life. My family and fiancé has suffered financial loss due to me being in the hospital and him not being able to work.
I love my my family and daughter beyond words and can't imagine spending one more day in the hospital away from them. I have a long road ahead health wise and pray me and my baby are safe and healthy and can raise enough awareness to get the medical attention I desperately need.
