On Friday, December 9, 2016, Andrew and Lisa Cook received the unfortunate news that their sweet four-year-old daughter, Paige, has leukemia. They had taken her to the doctor because she had been running a high fever. The doctor became concerned with the severity of the fever and the initial results of blood tests he had performed. More blood work and an x-ray from the ER confirmed that Paige had small traces of malignant cells in her bloodstream and had a very low white blood cell count as well as pneumonia. This was devastating news to the parents because they assumed they would be heading home with antibiotics and that Paige would be back on her feet within a couple days.
Paige was too sick to be treated at Dixie Regional Medical Center, so she was transported by life flight to Phoenix Children’s Hospital where doctors ran another round of blood tests. The tests confirmed cancer the next day, and Paige has been diagnosed with Type B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). ALL is the most common and treatable type of childhood cancers with an expected 90% survival rate. After the initial induction period, Paige's doctors will use the information they collect to schedule 2.5 years of out-patient therapy that will be presented in 4-week schedules. The amount of treatments will vary from one to the next.
At this time, Andy is staying in Phoenix with Paige, and Lisa will be travelling back and forth over the next few weeks as Paige undergoes her first round of chemotherapy. They have been set up in an apartment close to the hospital, but because Phoenix is so far away, travel and living expenses will eventually become a burden for the family. This account is being set up to help Andy and Lisa with travel/living expenses. If you do not feel you can make a monetary donation at this time, please leave an encouraging remark in the comments. Andy and Lisa have been overwhelmed at the response of love and support so far, and they are very grateful to their Heavenly Father for the outpouring of His love as they navigate this journey.
