Help for Sophie - Emergency Vet Bills

Donation protected
I started this GoFundMe page for my sister, Katie Hoover, and her dog Sophie, who has undergone treatment from emergency and neurological veterinarians for a sudden medical incident on February 19, 2019.

Sophie is a 4 year old basenji/cattle dog mix. On Tuesday February 19, she was walking across the dining room at home and fell to the floor immediately unable to move. She immediately lost the use of her front left leg and the paralysis quickly spread to her left rear leg tail and bladder. She was rushed to Mountain View Emergency Vet in Hagerstown, Maryland. She was sent home with medicine but was unable to walk and go to the bathroom by herself.

On February 21, Sophie and my sister returned to the Emergency Vet. After more X-rays, the vet felt that what had happened was neurological and they were referred to Bush Veterinary Neurology Services in Springfield, Virginia. They were thankfully able to get an appointment with the vet that day. The diagnosis from the neurologist was that this could have been a spinal stroke, which many dogs can recover from in 6-8 weeks.

Sophie has fluid and swelling around her spinal cord which is causing the paralysis and loss of function of her bladder. They said that this part of the spinal cord could possibly die and she would lose function of her left side and control of her bladder. For now, she is on steroids and other medications, my sister has to physically help Sophie go to the bathroom, and also has to move her limbs around to keep blood flowing to help heal what needs to be healed.

Our pets are woven into every part of our lives, to imagine life without one of them seems impossible. This unexpected event that’s happened to Sophie and Katie is unimaginable and heartbreaking. My sister is a dog groomer, the hardest worker you will ever meet, and lover and rescuer of ALL animals. She has saved so many bunnies, kittens, frogs, turtles, dogs it would be impossible to count the lives she’s saved, and with no motivation other than her pure love for animals.

The emergency vet and neurologist vet bills exceed $4,000 at this point. Any amount you can contribute is greatly appreciated!
